Re: You read my previous post...

Yep, the 2002 Max must have 265-275HP with a 6sp to have any "value" against the Altima. The tweaks on the Altima are going to be fun to see. As a point of info, the 2002 Maxima is probably not going to have more HP than the I35 (marketing crap), which means 260HP.

The 2002 Altima @240 HP (3000 lbs) will give a 260 HP 3300 - 3400 lbs 2002 Maxima a run.

I mentioned the next Maxima (2003-2004) because we all know that it's coming with something like 345 HP, but it will be a pig.

The 2003 (AKA Q45) Maxima will truly be a loss to the performance sedan world. (unless Nissan has a few jokers up thier sleeves)

I didnt say 2K3, 2K4, 2K5, 2K6 or anything else. A 2K2 5th gen SE will have to get at least 265 horse's OR MORE, or there is no point in putting an SER maxima in production w/ a 245 horse Alty . Correct? So this puts the "Alty will be faster" point to die. Thats all I said. I wasnt talking about the bigger future maxima. And the 6 speed maxima rumor is also with the 5th gen! the current one! Not the bigger, future one. So yes I can see a 6 speed 5th Gen SER if there is a 6 Speed Sentra SER. And the 5th gen does not compete w/ any Avalon. It competes with Camrys and accords. Get your facts straight. The SER w/ the bigger engine, and the 6 speed is rumored to be a midsize 5th gen. Not a big, squishy Maxima s you think. You brung up the Future next gen Maxima when no one else had.

Re: You read my previous post...

Actually, the 2k2 Altima Engine HAS to be VERY similar to the new 2k2 Maxima Engine... Modded, they should display similar gains... --AND-- you have to contend with the fact that the 2K2 altima is BOUND to be lighter than the 2k2 maxima...

Since Nissan knows that the core demographic of Maxima buyers (40-60 year old males, i believe) doesn't live life 1/4 mile at a time, the 2k2 max does not NECESSARILY have to be faster than the 2k2 altima in order to sell...

You are making assumptions based on facts nobody has yet!!!

And you keep putting words in my mouth... yes, the 2k2 and 2k3 max's are set to compete with accord's and camry's... I never disputed that... BUT so is the altima!! If you look closely at Nissan's strategy, they have already positioned the altima to take the Maxima's place when it finally gets yanked up to the next level (unecessarily smooth transition IMHO)...

I can't see how you could be so prejudiced against another Nissan Product... If it said Maxima, instead of Altima on the back, would you feel any differently? I personally am very excited about the new Altima.. Nissan is definitely taking steps in the right direction, and the spirit of their new cars is consistent with what drew me to buy a Maxima in the first place.

Re: Re: You read my previous post...

What I am saying is that the 2002 Altima at +- 3000 lbs (confirmed by nissan) @240 HP should be modable to hit the Maxima's (ok the I35's) 260 HP.

The new Altima rocks, and anyone who picks one up is going to love it. The VQ35 Maxima is going to be a blast, + 20% horsepower + 2% fat!

What I am saying is that Nissan has built the reputation of the Maxima for the past 10-15 years and they are going to change it with one feld swoop. I would much prefer that they drop the Altima but I understand the marketing dynamics behind the whole thing.

I agree that logically the way Nissan is going is the way to do it. Nothing prevents me from feeling some melancoly as to the demise of the spirit of the Maxima.

The Maxima and S4 don't belong in the same sentence.

Re: Re: You read my previous post...

Bert

I agree with what you are saying here, but the weights I see are:

2002 Altima SE (manual) = 3032 = 12.6 pounds per HP (240)
2002 Maxima SE (manual) = 3199 = 12.3 pounds per HP (260)

The Maxima will have a slight edge here. more so if it has a 6 speed for 2002.

Why don't you guys stop arguing about what Nissan is "going" to do in the future....it's all just speculative bullcr@p. worry about something more relevant to NOW.

Heh.. aright more relevant to NOW... -> Don't challenge someone with an S4 to a race... unless he's on foot... :-)

Ummmmmm, correction, I haul @$$ , and my AE KILLS S4's all the time!!! (then I wake up of course)

Sorry, even my beloved AE could never stands a chance of even driving on the same road as an S4, totally different cars.

BTW the Nissan people at the auto show said that the Max was going to be changed to compete with the cars like the Avalon and such, yuck!

IM gonna have to agree because.....

I own one and a max(me=s4/wife=max), not even funny as to the difference in cars! Both in handling and acceleration. I think its pretty clear they are two different cars in two different classes. Anyone who thinks differently is sadly mistaken.
