I was lucky and had a mild fender bender last year so my front bumper got painted at their expense. No more crappy nissan paint.

My paint is absolutely horrible! I want to get it painted in the worst way, but just can't afford it.

This includes all 5th gens not just early 5th gens. The only people that make out on this kind of lawsuits are the attorneys. They make $$$$$ on stuff like this. I seriously doubt anything will happen with this.

Nissan went good for a portion of my paint job. They agreed to paint along the rocker panels up to the molding on both sides. I had the rest of the car done while it was in the shop for $700. It was an independent shop and after two years the paint looks worse than before. I have factory mud flaps front and rear and still the sides of my car get sandblasted from road debris. I'm wondering if side sills like on the 2002 would help . I bought a bra for the front because I just couldn't look at the bumper anymore and it was cheaper than a paint job. My step mothers 01 is holding up much better.

You don't know nothin about sandblasted rockers....

I will be making some "custom" (i.e. longer) mudflaps before the winter and road salt start again....:

Thank you for this post Irish, it makes me feel a little better about the condition of my max. I probably have to go through harsher winters than anybody else on the ORG and after 2 years in my 2K2, my paint and especially my "sandblasted" rockers look like ****. They are not as bad as yours though, although give me 2 more years (mine is 2 years newer) and I suspect they will be comparable.

I guess it all depends on how Nissan mixed the paint on the given day. I would assume that my 2002 has been driven around northern Jersey for the past ~3 years (road salt), and the rocker areas seem to be fine. I do notice a fair bit of small chips on the front bumper and on the hood, but luckily it doesn't really show in a Sterling Mist unless you go up close to the car and look for it.

I have a feeling that the Infiniti dealership treats you differently than Nissan also.

I was rear ended and shoved into a car ahead of me, had front and rear bumpers re painted, hood, back pasenger side door (scratched from EMS), and back passengerside quarter pannel. already tons of chips esspecially on hood,I think all it takes is rain jk. I thought I was being so smart by having it done at the Nissan bodyshop, guess not. But I still Love my MAX!! wouldn't trade it for anything, well maybe

heh, well most of that was from ONE single trip to go skiing in W.Virginia, where most of the snow had melted but the road was covered with especially big rock salt....we were doing pretty good pace through the roads and could easily hear the rockers (and bottom of car) being blasted.....I actually wrote a letter to the W.Virginia DMV complaining about the type of road salt they use (it's more like gravel-sized instead of the usual small sand-sized grains)....they came back to me with some lame response about how they weren't responsible for damage done by debris on the roads. Hmm...they PUT the debris there ....for my part, I should have slowed down to like 35 and saved the paint, but the call of freshly snowed-on slopes was too much.......my fault, W.Va's fault....but I don't really blame Nissan for this case...I think the same would have happened with any car....if I'm mad at Nissan for anything it's for the short splash guards, not the paint on the rockers...(now, the paint on my hood and front bumper is another story...)

BTW, what is "AB", Alberta?

I'd like to see those custom mud flaps once you make them. If they don't look too bad, I'd like to make some too. I've noticed a lot of chipping on the plastic molding just below the bottom back corner of my rear car doors.

Update to my previous post...

Okay, while drying my car after the wash today, I found a lot of chips and scrapes and other various paint problems that I didn't see previously. The chips/scrapes were all over the car, but mostly up front. I also saw significant paint erosion on the rocker panel near the rear wheel.

So, this paint BS doesn't apply to just early 5th gen, as I have an 02. Guess I'm lucky it's Sterling Mist and doesn't show from a distance, but it still sucks to know that my car could use a paint job.

-Brian

Yep, Alberta.......I'm in the Northern part too. We have salt/sand on the roads 7-8 months of the year and it has done a pretty nice number on my rockers. My hood and bumpers are in pretty poor shape too from getting blasted with road debris. Oh well.

Frankly, I doubt they will "look" good....not my goal. I plan to make them so they can be easily attached when it snows here or I drive to go skiing and then easily removed afterwords.....
