Car dying when idling at a stop
Howdy all,
I don't usually frequent the 5th gen forums, but my wife's 2k Maxima has been running just a little rough lately with a bit of hesitation when accelerating, and it occasionally just stops running when idling at a stop light. It starts right back up.
Does this sound like a maf sensor problem? Any other things to check?
Thanks!

Sounds like it could be the MAF sensor. I had similar symptons on my 2k SE(hesitation, cold start stuttering) and a new MAF was the solution. You can order one from JR Nissan or DaveB for a slightly less than $100 and install it yourself. I had mine installed by Nissan so that I could get the ECU reprogrammed.

MAF definately. i had this problem and spen forever thinking it was the fuel because when i checked the pressure it was low, so i figured FPR but it turned out to be the MAF. got it replaced and the thing pulls really hard and steady. no stalling since then.

I just got off the phone. He has one with my name on it ready for me to pick up this afternoon.
Thanks Dave, if you see this.

I have the same problem. I put on a k&n cone filter with MAF adapter and changed the spark plugs. Spark plugs needed changing after 90k of use and my stock intake inlet was falling apart. I still have the problem. I think I'll try cleaning the throttle body as suggested. I think blackbirdvq said he could get the sensors for the MAF for cheap, so you may want to ping him for that. Again I think that’s what he said, maybe not, but it may be worth asking. I might be doing the same thing soon but I wanted to try things that I know need work first before spending money unnecessarily. I’ve tried testing the MAF with a multi-meter, but I don’t think I’m doing it right.

I recently posted similar issues (idle problem, engine shuttering at idle, engine shuttering at start up) with my Y2K and no good response. Anyway, how do we check MAF is failing? How do I know that my coil is bad too?
Is Autozone can pull the code without SES on and identify this issues?
Thanks

when my car lost power i checked the MAF as a posibility and everything checked out on the multi-meter & no MIL (SES). i looked to the fuel system and brought it in for a new pump/pressure regulator. it turned out to be the MAF. i guess there is alot of things that can go wrong with the MAF and still have it opperate within normal ranges, but the engine will let you know in its own way.

I installed the new maf and my wife said that so far the car is behaving normally.
The maf came with instructions saying to have the ecu reflashed, but I didn't and it seems to run fine with no hint of leanness or richness.
Why does the ecu need reflashing? Is the new sensor calibrated differently?

Mine did that too, the exact same thing. Just replaced my MAF today, so we'll see if that solved my problem. Don't forget to reset the ECU when you do the MAF see this thread --> http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=360385
