Whurring noise on highway...

I recently had my 2k2 on the first long highway trip since the I got it (a few weeks ago) and I noticed something odd.

If I keep the engine at about 2400-2500 rpm I notice this whurring noise coming from it. The noise is not very loud, but I did hear it slightly over my music. Everytime the tach passed by that point, I noticed the noise. There's no loss of power or shaking or anything accompanying it, just the noise.

Anyone else experience this and can offer some insight?

Thanks,
Brian

Could it be the fan clutch?

check out the wheel bearing. It's commom on the maxima for wheel bearing to go out, but they usually get replaced under the warranty.

I don't know why it would be the wheel bearing if I only hear it at about 2500 rpm, it doesn't have anything to do with the speed I'm going.

I should also note that this is an Automatic, I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but it might.

WHat speed is this noise coming at ? RPMs don't mean much really. Unless it does it in every gear at certain RPM, then it could be a bad catalitic converter going bad, or it could be torque converter pump. If it does it at certain speed only in one gear- then it could be wheel bearings- we need more info.

I'll do some highway driving tomorrow and see if it's just one gear or not, guess i'll have to shut OD off to find out. I'll let ya know.

Fans do not work with the car moving, over 35MPH the ECU will not signal the fan control module or fan relay to turn the fans on. It will have enough air flowing over the radiator at 35MPH+ to cool on its own without fan assist. And no Maximas do not have viscous coupling fans on them like RWD cars do- most newer RWD CARS- not trucks, do not use those anymore.

You don't happen to have an iPod or other MP3 player connected through your tape deck (and powered from cig lighter) do you?

If so, could be a ground loop.

No, just using the factory in-dash CD player (for now).

Yeah i get the same thing at 2500 rpms when accelerating (louder) or decel (quiter) in all gears on my 6 speed. Is it kinda of a metalic whirring sound?

Fezzik- your car, it might be a few things. Flywheel might be damaged- its dual mass and they love to make all kinds of weird noises. Since you have headers, then it shouldn't be your rear bank pre-cat. I am thinking something inside the tranny- differential bearings ? Does it do it with the car in neutral ? clutch in or out ?

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure mine does it in all gears too. (auto)

I guess Fezzik's could be someting different, but that'd be very coincidental, seeing as how it's at the exact same rpms and I also agree with the louder while accel. and quiter while decel. thing.

i notice the same noise in all my gears too, my engien seems to vibrate a little bit too. im pretty sure my wheel bearings are shot and so are my rotors, so that could be where the vibrations are coming from. too many problems all at once.

maybe it is your belt. too loose or too tight. check your air filter. does this happen when you are stopped at the rpm's?

brand new ContiExtremes, only happens at 2500rpm, has nothing to do with speed

Well with my mechanical knowledge. I am sure its not the air filter, not the belt. It only happens when moving at 2500 rpm
