'02-'03 Max most stolen car...

I just read a report that says research has shown the 2002 and 2003 model Maximas to be the most stolen cars on the road. The reason for this is because of the standard equipment HID headlights. My father-in-law has a 2002 and had his car taken in for some sort of identifying mark/security thing put into his headlights for free. I'm oretty sure all of you owners here are aware of this, but I wanted to share it anyway just in case. Take care of those cars, folks.

Thanks for the thought, Doc, we appreciate it... but this is already very well known here and not too long ago we had about 40 threads within 24 hours of the news release discussing this... time to

Wasn't sure how old this info was, but wanted to be helpful if possible. Max owners on this .org are generally very well-informed and knowledgeable about most things, so I figured you all would be on this already. Just glad you 5th geners have it covered.

Hey Doc....I think they might be referring to the HID headlight theft more than the whole car being stolen.

No, I knew the headlights were being stolen, but this article said specifically the entire car is most in danger of being ripped off. The Caddy Escalade led the way for SUV's. I'm thinking anyone who knows how to boost cars makes it simple by just taking the whole car and parting it out.

I would think this has to refer to the HIDs. I can't see how the max could be easy to steal since we have the immobilizer chip in our keys (which is why they cost $100 to replace a freakin key!). There can't be thousands of car theives out there who have the electronics necessary to duplicate the signal emitted by our keys......

Ok, here is one of the articles that speaks of this topic. Notice the date. The Cadillac Escalade EXT is the #1 and the 2002-2003 Maxima is #2.

"The Maxima's fancy high intensity headlights similarly attract the attention of thieves, according to the study.

"Investigators tell us the headlights are often stolen because they fit into earlier Maximas that were sold without such equipment," said Hazelbaker.

The 2002 and 2003 Maximas, which had the high-intensity lights, had 15.8 theft claims and 20.4 theft claims per 1,000 vehicles, while the 2001 models, which did not have those lights, had an industry-average 2.5 theft claims per 1,000."

Exactly. And it says the car not just the headlights are most commonly stolen. So, thieves who know what they are doing are stealing these cars despite the immobilizer chip somehow.

So what! All I was trying to do is be helpful and now you have to be like this. Sorry I tried to help. I'll leave quietly now. BTW, I'm not trying to fight anything. If it is a repost, tough s***, there are thousands of reposts every year. Get over it or don't read it.

OK, not to belabor this point but theft claims does not mean the whole car is stolen. Claims are filed by the owner with the insurance carrier when all or part (or even loose items within) a car are stolen. Thus a "theft" claim.

In the case of the 5.5G Maxima, the HID theft problem results in plenty of theft claims but probably very few actual thefts of the entire car itself. To thieves, the only thing that would make the 5.5G more attractive than the 5G are the HIDs.

I'm not too certain about the Escalade but I think they can be tracked (via Onstar) so it'd be REALLY stupid to ****** the whole car.
