Mid-pipe only on 3.5L?

Mid-pipe only on 3.5L?
Has anyone put just the mid-pipe and no cone on a 5.5g 3.5L?
I know the results are probably very minimal (+/-) but just wondering if anyone has ever done it before and what they experienced in terms of sound and/or performance gain or loss if any.
I will be doing mine tonight with just a frankencar midpipe and GAB coat hangar mod.
I was used to 4th gen where the mid-pipe can be put in directly w/o the filter, but with the 5.5g the midpipe has to be cut in otder for this to work with the stock air box, so I was forced to cut about 3" total, (about 1.5" from each end.)
Recently observing the 6th gen intake system it actually employs a much more straight thru design from the TB to MAF when compared to the 4th and 5th gen designs. Curious as to the engineering controls behind this method, whether it be sound related or shifting the power/torque to different areas of the rpm range.
Any feedback or suggestions would be nice.
