P0335 pending code - 2001 Maxima GLE
P0335 code has been pending since I replaced starter about a week ago. I have not cleared the code with my scanner yet.
Is it possible that some rust droppings fell into the flywheel area and have been picked up by the magnetic field of the POS crankshaft position sensor which is in the same general area of the engine?
The car is running fine and I have had no hard start issues at all.
I have read that sometimes dirty sensor(s) can trigger this code.
Is there a different OBD code thrown by the REF crankshaft position sensor, or is the same OBD code triggered by either sensor?
I'm going to take the POS crankshaft sensor out and clean it off. The REF crankshaft sensor takes a little more work to get to from what have read.
Thanks for any insight / guidance

If the code is pending, then your check engine light is not on - correct. When a code is pending, it means the problem happened but went away and the ECU is waiting for it to happen again and then the check engine light will come on.
You might as well go ahead and clear the code. I would also be proactive and take off the sensor and clean it.
The CKPS (REF) sensor will cause code P1335.

Thanks Dennis,
Correct, the CEL is not on. I'll clear code and clean the (CKPS) POS sensor. Should I also clean the (CKPS) REF sensor?
Could the starter that I installed be causing the pending P0335? It is an aftermarket starter.
Thx

Since the (REF) sensor has its own trouble code, I don't see any dire need to clean it. If you feel ambitious, go ahead. Preventative maintenance certainly won't hurt. I live by the motto "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I would leave it be.
What caused the pending P0335 is anybody's guess. It could have been crud that was dislodged and fell in during the change out. It could have been metal shavings on the replacement starter that are no longer on the starter. About all you can do is clean the sensor and monitor the situation.

Thanks for the advice. I also live by "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I just want to confirm that the CKPS (POS) sensor is the one located near the transaxle bell housing not the one located below the crankshaft pulley... correct?

Hey guys I have a 2002 maxima and having trouble locate my crankshaft sensor. I do not have a sensor located on top of my oil pan behind the front passenger wheel. I believe my crankshaft sensor is just under the front bumper about a foot back on transmission/transaxle housing.
I have attached a pic of what I think is my ckps along with what is a metal plate with two wires attached. I have the sensor along with the electrical plug out of the way.
Is that my crankshaft position sensor? What is that metal plate with two wires (is it a ground plate?) Also does that metal plate go between the ckps and housing or does it attach on top of the ckps?
I took this sensor out a while back and can't remember how it should be put back together.
thanks,
bill
