replacing shift ****

I have a 2001 car with a manual transmission ( stick shift ). I would like to replace original shift **** with an after market one; however, I cannot figure out how to remove the original one. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I had to use a pair of pinchers to twist it off. Factory glue is pretty strong.

Just be careful to use another pair of pinchers to hold the metal rod (with a rag wrapped around the rod) while twisting, otherwise you may damage the shift linkage below.
