I'm in the process of having a custom exhaust (cat back) installed on my 00 maxima. I plan on using a 2.5" diameter tubing. The question is, what type of muffler would be the best choice for this car. The guy at the muffler shop has a GENERIC turbo muffler for only $30 bucks. Will this suffice or is there another type of muffler, which most shops carry, that will be a better choice for me?

catback?

I'm a newbie ... what's a catback?

I'm getting a Stillen Y-Pipe ... then getting custom stainless steel piping 2 the mid-cat ... then some more custom piping from the midcat 2 the exhuast ... using wider than stock piping 2 get the air flowing freer ...

I'm looking at doing the same thing. I'm looking at using either a DynoMAX UltraFlo SS muffler or a MagnaFlow Mirror Finish SS Street Performance muffler. Still haven't made up my mind yet.

Warning its gonna be loud as ****

I sure hope your prepaired for the increase in sound. Tell the muffler shop you want a resonator installed too and not to throw away your stock 2k muffler. You can sell it to others for around $150. I have noticed that if you don't have a resonator installed especially in a VQ it gets loud as hell. It won't sound like some of the loud 4cylinders but its more of a booming sound.

2k Max Custom exaust

While discussing the building of a custome exaust with my local Performance shop the owner stated that evan though we are building a 3inch system from the manafolds down and back he will not build it without 2 resonators. He said this engin is load as (well you know) without them.
Granted I am paying a lot more than others I am building for power. Porting and polishing as well as extrude hoaning and ceramic coating the Manifolds. Then 3 inch pipe down from there into a custom 3 inch ypipe then RT 3 inch in and out Cat then 3 inch back to the rear wheels and down to two 2 1/4 pipes over the rear suspension and back to a 3inch to the muffler. As for the muffler we are arguing a Supertrap (my preferance) to a superdrager style (shop prferance)muffler. this is to go with the planned Super charger with other engin work to come.

One more time . . .

I have a custom cat back, 2-1/2" piping, no resonator, and a DynoMax Super Turbo muffler with a stainless oval tip. It's definitely not "loud as hell". It sounds really sweet with NO DRONE at freeway speeds. Total cost including installation was $230.00.

You can check out the design of the Super Turbo muffler at:

The stock exhaust pipes and variable capacity muffler sound great and port really well IMO.

ohboiya . . .

My suspicion is that a Y-pipe and 2-1/2" piping without a resonator is going to introduce a pretty serious drone, stock muffler notwithstanding. If that's an issue for you, I'd suggest you purchase a B-pipe when you buy your Y-pipe.

The stock muffler is really no big deal. It simply has a valve built into it which permits a secondary exhaust flow through the muffler when the engine exceeds 2,000 rpm. The question, of course, is how much time you plan to spend driving your car around with the engine taching under 2,000 rpm.

My guess . . . and this is only a guess . . . is that Nissan developed the stock muffler to reduce noise and help smooth the engine at idle. I say that because my engine doesn't idle quite as smoothly as my wife's engine (we both have 2K Maximas), particularly when the engine is cold. But after my engine warms up, it idles just fine.

Custome Exaust Expectaions

With the Exast I plan on having done. I expect a possable 15hp to 30hp increase. However this is befor te spercharger and other mods. After Supercarging, Upper intake, and head work the exaust work I am performing may result in numbers higher than that. Just remember when runing under boost you want to get the exaust out of your car as fast as you are getting it in. (some back pressue still needed of course)
