Considering swapping my 01 for an 03

A friend of mine his selling his 03 Maxima, 6 speed. It's completely loaded with everything but navigation, and has 13k miles on it. My 01 has almost 54k miles and I think it's time to get rid of it. I've heard numerous Maxima owners say that the 6 speed tranny is horrible and unreliable, and that the 5.5's have more general problems than the 5th generation. I don't have time or money to deal with an unreliable car because I can only afford one car at the point in life. I've had no major problems with my 01 since the day I got it. If you were in my position, would you upgrade or stick with what I have?

If you know the history of your car from day one, and it's proven reliable, it might be best to stick with what you've got. I've owned two used cars - this one I have now has been good to me so far, so I guess I got lucky, but my first Maxima just had things that kept cropping up probably from abuse as a former rental car. But if you know your friend and the entire car's history, go for it. The 6-speed on the 02/03 makes it all worth it.

My 2k2 has been very reliable. No tranny problems (6-speed). On the other hand 54k on your Max is barely broken in! Have you had problems with it?

No problems at all. In the past I have traded my other cars in at 60-70k miles on them just because I don't want to deal with problems when the mileage gets higher.

Most VQ's that are reasonably maintained will go well past 150,000 miles.

First of all, you need to sell your car and come up w/ extra $$$$ to buy that 03. I would save some money and keep your 01.

Not really true. PLUS, the car would be under warranty until 60,000 miles for engine/tranny. The 3.5 engine and 6 speed transforms the car. But the other posters have a point, you already have a nice maixma-why throw the money towards the same car with a few more options. Do you really hate the auto? Im sure the diff in price would be 4-5K. Buy some stocks for retirement. Cars are a bad investment.
