3rd gear grinding

when i do a speed shift into third, i makes a grinding sound, but goes into gear. i know i have to clutch in all the way because i shift the same for all gears, and 3rd is the only one to do that, if anyone knows what this might be please let me know. also had a friend drive it and it did the same thing on him, so i don't think that it is my driving.

I dont know what you call a "speed shift" but you can't go from 6th to 3rd without grinding .. I was on the highway and tried this. I did get it into 3rd, but not without a little grinding ... I also find myself bouncing off the rev limiter as well .... probably more then I should ...lol

MT-90 tranny fluid smoothed mine out. Not sure about the 5 speeds, but on my 6 speed, the angle of the shift lever into 3rd is important. A bit off, and it's harder to get it into gear.

I'm assuming you're upshifting when the problem occurs, and by speed shifting you mean trying trying to shift quickly while using the clutch. Some peeps use that term to describe shifting without the clutch. That's a lot more difficult and a lot worse for the tranny.

nissan replaced my 6spd because of that problem...i also had my tranny stuck in 3rd! guess that required fixin'! try nissan service a couple times, and try to make friends with the service writer, and the service mgr. it will get you a long ways when it comes to having your car fixed quicker and hopefully under warranty.

You did not specify how many miles on your car but if over 60k, u might be hosed as the powertrain warranty has expired. If you're under 60k miles, definitely let a dealer at it as it may be a synchro going bad...

It's definitely not normal for a 5-speeds tranny to graunch in any gear. The six-speed trannys (specially the early versions) are notorious for the third-gear 'graunch', but not the five-speed trannies....they be butter-smooth into every gear, so....seems to me u have a problem.....
