Turn off the caps lock, and you need new coils.

Yup, ignition coil needs to be replaced. It's a common problem among 2k maximax and should be recalled by Nissan. The dealer will charge you around $500 to replace all of them. It's very easy to replace them on your own but the computer needs to be upgraded so think twice about it. Hope this helps.

Why does the computer need to be updated? Is this something like just re-learning the ECU? Or is it something the dealer needs to do? I'm thinking of buying a 2000 SE 5-speed with 64K on it, should this be something for me to look forward to?

I'll let someone else answer the first part of your question only because I don't know the exact answer myself.

I bought my 2000 Maxima SE (auto) with about 75,000 miles. 5 months later I replaced the ignition coil because the engine was misfiring and replaced the spark plugs because this is what you're supposed to do anyway. Then 1 year later at 95,000 miles the air flow meter needed to be replaced because the car was stalling and the front motor mount needed a replacement as well. They also performed more tests on the car and said it needs new front links and "extensive service work". I bought the car in May of 2003 and so far spent roughly $1500 on repairs. And yes, the ignition coil problem is very common and people are actually petitioning for a recall, so it's definitely something for you to look forward to if you buy the car.
Lesson learned, I'll never buy a car with high milage just to save a few bucks. Now I'm actually debating selling the car to avoid more trouble...

the computer does not need a flash for the coils. there are a few tsbs which include programming such as replacment of the maf and o2 sensors which is done only by nissan with the consult 2. the coil replacement has no and requires no programming. if you replace the coil(s) yourself then leave the battery unplugged overnight or have autozone reset the ses light with their obd2 code reader.

Thanks ekg2...
I think that I'm gonna pass on that 2000 SE Max. I just found a 2000 Accord SE for just about the same $$$ and 50k miles. The guy has all the maint records for the car, something the other owner could not produce much of.

later
