Rear Turning Signal Bulbs

Hi, I know that many of you hate the standard orange light in the rear silver turning signal and so do I :-) I wanted to change it yesterday with a red bulb and happily went to the store and bought 1156A red coated bulbs. I figured they would look nicer. Well, those do not seem to fit in the bulb housing. The nipples on the original bulb base are closer together than on 1156A which are directly opposite to each other, i.e. at 180 degrees angle, whereas the OEM ones are at about 150-160 degrees away. Apparently I need PY21W bulbs and 1156 would not fit...

The options seem to be: 1) keep going with the orange ones or 2) paint the orange ones so that they appear silver on the outside and still blink orange.

Has anyone found perhaps red bulbs that would be a good replacement for PY21W, or attempted replacing the bulb housing so that 1156 could be put in, or done anything to make the rear assembly look better?

i had this problem when i bought the APC tinted bulbs. what i did is just filed off one of the pegs and poped the bulb in. i have had them about 8months now and the are fine. you can do this if you want, or like you said just paint the originals. i think it looks great with the clear bulbs and IMO i dont like red blinkers. i say paint the orange ones

Hm, good idea! What color are your APC's?

Is it illegal to have rear turning lights clear? I thought they have to be either red or orange (amber)...

Has anyone tried using LED's in any application? How do you like them?
