Whirring sound from 6MT

Whirring sound from 6MT
For the past month or so, I get this whirring sound from the engine area as the RPMs rise or fall. The volume of the sound follows the RPMs. When I push her (or rev at standstill), the whirring gets louder and louder until I let off and then the whirring get quieter until it's NEARLY inperseptable at idle.
At idle, with the driver's door open, I hear a high pitched rattle sound (almost like a whistle)...which goes away as soon as I start to depress the clutch. I can hear this plain as day when I am in my garage.
Does any one know what these symptoms mean?
Thanks for the help,
Ripper

Does it nmake this sounds when in Nuetral? (guessing not sinc it stops when sluctch pulled in). Rev it in nuetral and see if sounds continues-if so-engine related. If only in gear, the gears are whining and its tranny related. Our trannys and engines are warranted to 60K miles so may wnat to take it in if under 60K miles.

warranty
Don't count on the warranty helping if it is the clutch. I just had a long discussion w/ Nissan regarding whether or not they would cover my problems. After speaking with several dealers and the warranty hotline, I don't think it covers much. From the warranty booklet (which is what they quoted on the phone and would not get any more specific):
"This warranty covers any repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship."
Under Transmission and Transaxle:
"...,clutch cover and housing,..."
They also told me that the dealer's technicians are the "eyes and ears" and that they rely on them for judgement on what is covered. If you want a second opinion, you pay to have it towed to another dealer.
The entire clutch seems to be regarded as a "wearable item". Mine was at 37,1xx miles.

Now that you mention it, I don't notice the whirring noise in nuetral. But the faint whistle sound is still there at idle until I depress the clutch about 1/2 inch. Otherwise, car drives and shifts fine.
Oh well. I'll just try to produce that sound when my replacement Bose CD player comes in about a week.

My car does the same thing. I haven't taken it to the dealer or anything. I posted a thread about it and got all kinds of different answers about what it was, so I really have no idea, but it doesn't affect the performance of anything, so I'm not too worried about it. If you find out what it is, post it, so I can finally find out what's going on.

Had a 350z come into my dealership with the same symptoms.
Turned out to be a bad throw out bearing, and a worn glazed clutch due to "a bad" pressure plate.
It was a friend of mine, so we did the right thing.

Full Syn Upgrade??
I hear the 350z's are having alot of issues with the clutches -- is this true nismo star?
I don't have these issues in my 6spd, but I have heard some strange sounds coming from there b4!
Not sure if you've changed the TRANNY FLUID yet, but might I suggest trying this if you haven't already?! I did mine around 10k miles with AMSOIL full syn, and it was a nice improvment -- not huge, but nice.
I was at the stealership last week, and they ACTUALLY tried to SELL me a $165 full syn tranny fluid change to improve the shift action in the box.
I was floored. Never thought the stealers would adopt this mentality -- anything for a buck, right?!
At the least, report it to the stealer when you're in next time - and hope for the best. You'll be documented and "on reocrd" if it fails under the powertrain warranty in the future.
