Fuel Question

I Usually Use 93 Octane Fuel In My 2000 S.e. I Recently Used Reg. Unleaded And About Half A Tank Left. I Heard A Pinging/rattling/knocking Sound, One Of These Hard To Descripe Sounds When The Car Upshifted About 2500-3000 Rpms. Is This Normal If I Changed The Octane The Car Was Using? I Went Back To 93 Octane And Haven't Heard The Knocking Sound. Also The Sound Onlyt Come When In Drive If I Rev It Up In Park In The Same Rpm Range I Don't Hear It.

Thanks

I drove my car for 70K miles with reg 87 ... my ecu adjusted for it, got good gas milage and all but 93 is the way to go for performance and to avoid Detonation (gas exploding to early) That can damage your engine.

I had this once too -- tried a tank of 89 on the HWY, and got pinging when I returned to the city.
Not worth saving .10 cents per gallon to me....for $1.60 more per fillup, I get performance and piece of mind.

Why bother with such a nominal savings??? Don't supersize next time you hit the drive-thru.... you might save money on the weight you Don't GAin!!

I always use at least 91 in my Maxima. Around here, the gas goes 87, 89, 93, so I pretty much have to use 93, since there is no 91 at the pumps here. If you drive the car easy and it's cold, you can probably get away with lower octane fuel, but the harder you drive and the hotter it gets, the more likely you are to experience early detonation with lower octane fuel. That will cause the knocking/pinging sound, and it's NOT good for your engine. If you only hear it rarely for a short period of time, your car is probably fine, but if you hear it on a consistent basis or for an extended period of time, the damage will just get worse and worse.

Thanks For The Help. I Figured This One Out Myself, Just Wanted To Double Check My Experience. And Yes I Usually Experience Better Gas Mileage Using 93 Octane 50-75miles For Per Tank Vs 87. Thanks Again Guys.

Peace
