Don't you have to Flush it and not drain it? I was always under the impression a machine needed to be used to flush out all of the loose particles. I would also NOT recommend just doing this as something to do. There are regular service intervals for that sort of thing for a reason. How many miles you got? Don't the AT need a friction modifier?

When i got my Tranny flushed, i went to a mechanic who had a machine which sucks out all the old fluid and puts in the new one. Some people dont feel its neccessary to take out all of the fluid and just do a drain of about 8qts or so. Usually people wait at least 30k before flushing their tranny, but at the same point in time not everyone believes in flushing the tranny.

from what i remeber there is no gasket... it is a sealed unit and you need a machine to pull the rest of the fluid out... and yes you need to get the rest of the fluid out!!! the old fluid is filled with the s**t that causes problems and simply draining what is in the res. will only get like 20% of the fluid. my brother is a mechanic and HE told me to goto Nissan and use the proper machine...
dont be lazy and cheap with the maint. that is part of owning a 30+ thousand dollar car, they are expensive to maintain....

I recently flushed my transmission. I also dropped the pan and cleaned it out. I had about 48k on my car. The fluid was burnt and the pan and magnets were very dirty. If you want to do it yourself, I would suggest completely cleaning it out. Just flushing the transmission does not clean all the crap out. It only removes the old fluid. When you put new fluid in, the detergents in it will wash all that crap back up into the transmission. This is why some high mileage trannies will fail after flushing the transmission. There is information on how exactly to do this in the Fluids & Lubricants forum. It is a sticky. Just remember to measure exactly what you remove, so you can replace it accurately. From what most people recommend, I used Amsoil ATF.
Also, there is a gasket. Mine happened not to have one when I dropped the pan, but you need to replace it anyway. So now it has a gasket. You will also need to replace the drain plug gasket and all 21 of the pan bolts. They have a special sealant on them that will break when you remove them. These pan bolt are supposed to be tightened to around 6ft-lbs. This is a very low torque, so make sure your torque wrench can go that low.
