What are suspension bushings for?

I see this big GD going on for bushings and a whole bunch of other related products and I was wondering what was their function? I'm talking about this thread btw:

bushing are like a cussion with the motal parts. metal to metal is bad poly urithane are they way to go keeps the moving parts together longer
