Hey I heard that cold air intakes do some kind of harm to your engine/engine components in the long run

is this true or what

i dont have any scientific data, but my 92 cougar i bought in 1999 had a K&N intake, and my parents just got rid of it last year, my 94 accord had what we would call a GAB, and that is still goin (friend bought it), my 92 3000GT had one, same situation, and lastly, my 98 accord had a short ram AND a AEM V2, and 40K after i bought it, its still goin good as new.

i think its a myth.

hmm but isn't it natural for the cars engine to get warm air inside it..and putting cold air in it...wouldn't that do something?

well, a short ram intake still gives it warm air, so thats out. bu even with cold air, i really dont think it will shorten the life of an engine. theoretically, especially if the ECU keeps relearning, it will learn to the colder air.

No. Intakes have no neg effect unlike turbo/sc or nitrous. These do shorten the life of "unbuilt" engines. Both CAI as well as WAI are designed to allow an engine to breath better by increasing the air flow to the engine.

They can cause harm by improper installation. For instance, not securing the clamps on the filter causing the filter to become loose and allowing debris to enter the tube and directly into the engine.

If you follow the installation instructions and also regularly maintain the filter, you will be fine.

BlkShadow01,

Having cars run on cold air doesn't harm the engine in anyway shape or form. The
cold air contract as apposed the hot air where it expand and less air enters the intake.
That's the reason why cars get more power with cold air vs hot air. NOS is a prime
example of cooling the air at a rapid rate to put more air into the motor. NOS can
cause damage to the engine if you don't setup the wet or dry nos setup correctly.
I hope this helps

Mike

yes, you can wash it if its a K&N filter. you need the filter cleaning kit to re-oil it. if its an apex'i filter, you cant clean it, you need to replace it.

21. Can I use anything other than K&N cleaner and oil?

We recommend that you only use K&N oil and cleaner. K&N air filter oil is a compound of mineral oil blended with special polymers to form a very efficient tack barrier. We have performed tests on numerous oil combinations and our blend has the required properties for maximum flow and filtration. Petroleum products such as transmission fluid and motor oil will soften and destroy the rubber sealing edges. Our cleaner is a non-detergent degreaser. Solvents and gasoline will harden the rubber seals causing the filter to distort (shrink). A mild detergent can be used in a pinch, but care should be taken to fully rinse it out. Rinsing detergent out of a filter is similar to getting soap out of a sponge; it’s not that easy to do. Always make sure the filter is completely dry before re-oiling.
im sure some of that is marketing, to get you to use their particular oil, but when you clean a K&N filter, it becomes white...much whiter than its nice new pink color. reoiling will bring it back to the pink, so i dont know how the filter will work when its white. someone else should be able to tell you, but i dont want ya to screw up an MAF or something cuz it isnt filtering right.

if you were talking about the intake being durtty it self (inside) i have seen people on here using seafoam but if you are talking about just the filter then use some sort of reoil kit fram makes one two for that new air hog stuff.

The VQ does have that nitpicky MAF sensor but I don't know how all the CAIs affect it.

excessive air supply that the aftermarket intake systems provide cause exessive wear on the apex seals inside our engines. I highly advise you not to install em.
