Limited slip differential whining?
Limited slip differential whining?
Hi everyone,
I have a 2001 A.E. manual tranny and when it's cold or humid there's a whining noise coming from the front axle, when starting from a stop, it dissapears as soon as the car starts moving. There's no subsequent noise when shifting to 2nd, 3rd, etc and the noise seems to dissapear after a while, when the tranny probably warms up. Also, there's no noise when reversing. I was suspecting either the clutch mechanism although I think it would affect reverse too, or possibly (lack of) lubrication in the limited slip differential, but I couldn't find any reference to this so far, does anyone have any ideea about this, is there need to change the lubricant regularly?
Rgds,
Coleus

Bejay1, good question....I don't know if the original owner ever replaced the gear oil, but do you think this could be the cause of that peculiar noise? I could consider a transmission oil change, but how about that limited slip differential, does that require regular maintenance, I saw nothing in the user guide...
Thanks,

My clutch whined before and after I changed my fluid to Amsoil. I have a VLSD also and whine is louder and more often when it is cold but does it even when it is warm. I haven't had any problems in terms of performance though. I can always break rubber no matter what and no slipping whatsoever occurs.
