I thought nissan fixed this misfire issue in the 5.5 gen..?
I guess not... 25,xxx miles, and my CEL came on... checked the codes, and came up as "multiple cyl misfire"
I thought that nissan fixed this problem from past issues with the 99sel's, and the 2000-2001.. Now I have to take off my intake in the cold, and install the factory one, and bring in my car for service. yay.
sorry... just complaining here.

I had the same code about 6 weeks ago. I used my OBDII to read the code but I didn't clear it. It stayed on for about 2 days and then went out by itself. It hasn't come back since. I chalked it up to the weather getting cold really fast and the engine adjusting to it.

Not all misfires are caused by bad coils!
Usually on bad coils you'll see a random cylinder misfire (030x) + 1 or more individual cylinders where the coils are failing (0301..6). On Maximas it's often accompanied by AFR codes (mixture too lean/rich) or the ABS/trac lights coming on.
To give you an example our used car tech just had an '04 Grand Chero with the 4.0L inline six and 14,xxx miles. It was throwing misfire codes on #2 and #5 and running rough. He changed the plugs, the coil pack, ran combustion chamber cleaner, did leakdown and compression tests, and spent 2 or 3 hours checking injectors and ignition control signals. Still, it wouldn't quit throwing codes. In desperation he pulled the head and found #2 and #5 cylinders had badly pitted valve seats and very, very worn guides, the result of a bad head casting from the factory!
Anyway, there are tons of reasons for multiple cylinder misfire codes. Occasionally a bit of bad gas or a spot buildup of carbon can cause em. They've also shown up on initial cold starts when the ECU misjudges the cold AFR and shoots too much or little fuel into one or two cylinders, or when the driver (accidentally or purposefully) opens the throttle a bit while cranking the engine.
I'd look at the # of starts since the codes were set and the # of good trips since the codes were set -- if it's a one time incident, and doesn't come back after a couple weeks, you should be OK. If it happens again, then you'd want to look into the coils, or other misfire issues.

hmmm... good information. thanks.
I called nissan to make an appointment, and when i went back out to the car 3 hours later, the CEL was gone. I wonder if the ecu still keeps the code in there until it is removed by a computer. I really wish the code would come back... i want new free coils.

I have relative issues with my (2004) SL. Engine misfires at startup in cold weather, but smooth's out after engine gets warm and idles at around 750rpm. I also have seen the SES(service engine soon) indicator light tripped by this condition, and then go out by itself. I replaced the spark plugs and it seemed to fix the issue, but as soon as the cold weather returned, the issue returned with it. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could shed some light on this issue.

Check the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) that it is reporting the correct temperature.
Also post your problem in the correct forum. This is for the 5th generation cars and you have a 6th generation car. There are many changes to your car that we are not knowledgeable about.
