Just bought a 2002 Max. What should I know about this model?

Hi Guys, Just bought a 2002 Max. I originally had a 1996 4th generation max, but traded it for a 2002 SE. Anything thing I should know about the 5th generation? Thanks

haha, they get stolen...alot. we are the #2 stolen or broken into car or something like that. there is a dealer installed modification that makes the headlights harder to steal. its all in the "stickys" at the top of the forum. check out the FAQ-U and the How-to/installation one. awesome info in there.

everyone on here will tell you that the alarm isnt gonna do much. its not that they steal the car, they steal the lights. someone whose done it before will be able to get your headlight out in a matter of minutes. unless you hear your alarm goin off, and get outside before they take the lights, its not gonna be much protection. even then, the damage will have been possibly done. there are guys on here who have come out and saw that people tried to steal them, and it still ruined their lights.

if your gonna get a viper, i would suggest the 791, that pages you and tells you when a sensor goes off. that might help somewhat.

i added a system, took out Bose and have an eclipse navi, arc audio and rainbow speakers/subs. the only performance mod so far that i did is a berk intake. everything else is in a HUGE pile waiting for spring, haha.

its good that you didnt opt for bose if you wanna build a system, itll make your life easier and open up your options.

yes, park your car in the garage.

What i learned is that you must maintain your tire pressure to keep your gas mileage good.

second, do not under any circumstances drive to nj in your 2002 maxima.

I plan on buying a DVD/Navigation system, Boston component speakers and JL Audio Amps and subs. Not really sure if I want to put an intake in or just add a K&N fliter. Do you have pics of your eclipse installed?

I like the way that looks in the dash. Is it also a DVD player?

I don't drive to NJ only because I hate driving around there. Jug handle turns and teeny tiny street signs drive me up the wall.

The headlights are problematic due to theft, but it happens all over. Not just NJ or NY. You can do the Data Dot recall, but it will cause more damage when someone is trying to steal your lights. I think you're better off without them. If they're going to steal them, they're going to steal them. The two way alarm helps.

ANother thing to watch out for is your MAF. They seem to blow up pretty often with the members of this org. I know I had mind blow up.

Aside from that, my 02 had been pretty reliable. I've since added an Injen and a Frankencar catback.

I have the Kenwood DDX7015 with navi and I love it. Also, I don't have that unsightly gap, but the Eclipse is an equally, if not better, headunit. I'm not a fan of flip units (i.e. AVIC-N1). I'll do stereo this spring along with dropping it.

Hope that helps.

What I've discovered after having a 2k2:

-get rid of the crappy Bridgestone RE92's
-get the rear quarter window windnoise tsb done and you'll be happier
-dont be shocked if your hood starts to vibrate at highway speeds...theres a tsb for it
-be very careful with the MAF b/c it is very sensitive to certain intakes or how you handle/clean it
-you no longer have a turning radius
-be careful of stolen headlights (depending where you live)
-your stock alarm sucks
-your rear tailight stop lamp bulbs will probably blow early
-the car is really fast and attracts young girls

max5spd, for my interest as well as nismax's, is the only reason i have a gap because of the design of the eclipse headunit? i see you have the GXE trim piece as well, so why does yours sit so much better than mine? it even seems like your trim piece fits better....

We have had our Maxima for over 2 years now and I disagree with the first, third, and fifth points.

Mass Air Flow meter, MAF...over oiling an intake, i guess knocking it around installing an intake, and a dirty filter, etc, can cause our MAFs to go bad. but of course, they can go bad just on their own too.

Must be the design of the Eclipse. What's the height of the unit? I can go home and measure mine later. I didn't even use the factory trim piece. I do have slight gaps all the way around. Maybe your mounting holes on the unit are just lower where mine are more centered?

I actually prefer the 2k2+ tails over the 2k-2k1 black tails. I think the older ones really look good on black cars, but otherwise the 2k2+ ones look fine to me. It's all a matter of opinion.

true story: I met this HOT A$$ CHICK at a bar near home and got her number. Went out with her the next week and really started to hit it off. Turns out she was 23, has a modeling contract, is a fitness instructor and gym owner. Oh ya, and she was blond. Long story short: on our second date she asked me why I was driving the maxima and why did I baby it so much. I told her to hold on and that's when I hit the gas. When we were doing 60 about 5 seconds later, she turned, looked at me and said, "oh. I didn't think this thing was that fast!" (gotta interupt here: she has a '82 S-10 w/ a Chevy 350 in it as her "toy"...). Anyway, we're getting married on 4-16-05.

Ya, this car will help end your single life pretty quickly.

the design of the 2K2s look way too much like altezzas to me. they look substantially better when they are all red circles instead of red and orange. i do agree they look better on a light colored max, but i still hate them.

Then it seems that our jughandles and small street signs ARE doing their job.

wait, the street signs in other parts of the country are bigger? haha. and nowhere else has jughandles? you mean, it doesnt make sense in other parts of the country to turn right to turn left?

you havent LIVED until you navigated the willowbrook mall exit to 80, or the Somerville circle. or Route 9.

2 things to know

1)Stock suspension is mushy

2)If you want more power buy headers first. I wish I would have just bought the headers instead of the y-pipe and catback. I would have gotten a much bigger gain for the same money and my exhaust would be quiter with stock catback and headers than my current setup.
