first of all, who put it on that tight????

im guessing you already tried an oil filter wrench right?
some of my thoughts would be a big pipe wrench, or the oil filter wrenches that are basically a cloth strap wrapped around a socket.

Putting a screwdriver though the filter would be my last option as if I couldn't get it off then I could still drive it. I get good results by using a strap wrench or a small pipe wrench. A pipe wrench would be your best option now with just part of the filter left. Also if you go at it from inside the wheel well with the tire turned all the way to the right, you can get at it better. To prevent this problem in the future just tighten the filter 3/4 of a turn after you feel it snug up to the engine block.

yeah a starp wrench, or try a rubber pad like they use for opening jars, if you need better access take the plastic shroud inside the wheel well off, there are two plastic phillips clips, and 2 10mm bolts, one inside the wheel well, the other underneath the front. It's easier to get at and you don't spill the oil because you don't have to tip the filter all cockeyed to get around the plastic piece. take 2 minutes to save 20 minutes

i put it on that tight but i didnt really think it was all that tight, it was the same as i always put it on, just a different filter a bosch one if that makes any diff. anyway there is nothing left to get a grip on so its only the ring part that screws into the block. im at a loss here.

if your neighbors think your crazy, they obviously dont work on their own cars!

if you have to go with the hammer and screwdriver method..take it easy at first, you dont want to crack any threads or anything. and make sure your as parallell as possible with the threads when you tap it.
