Paint

Has anyone had problems with the paint wearing off the rear wheels wells, especially just above the sill extension (and in fact the sill extension near the rear wheel is also paint free) on an SE? My 02 Maxima that I bought in March 04 came that way. An errant car rental jockey on a joy ride decided to take out the back end of my car so one half of the rear was replaced and the whole back half of the car repainted. This happened in September and now, three months later, I see that the paint has already started to come off at the same locations as described above.

I could not find any TSBs on this problem. Does anyone have an idea on how this could occur? I do intend to go back to the bodyshop and before I blast them, I want to make sure its nothing I've done wrong, like driving the car, for example.

Thanks in advance for your help and Happy New Year all.

Paint

Thank you for your replies. I should be more specific. Its the paint on the body just behind the rear passenger doors and not the wheels themselves. In some spots it looks pitted and in one other area its as if someone took a knife and carved out a section of paint as its down to the bare metal.

Yes...you could say I've had that problem, thanks to the monster W.Va. road salt on the way to the ski resorts

Mine is so beat up on the front end, I put on a bra to cover it. Nissan paint sux and you either have to deal with it or get it repainted unless you had the forethought to install a clear bra and accessories when it was new.

Yeah Nissan paint is horrible. Was it repainted by Nissan? If not then I would def. go back to the body shop and ask some stern questions.

irish-

I've seen those pictures like three times and it makes me cry every time. (Not really, but what happened to your car does suck.) I'm sorry, man.

Again, thanks for all of your replies. I didn't mention that the rest of the car was pitted like crazy when I bought it and am somewhat happy, reluctantly, to hear that Nissan's paints suck. I did have the car repaired at a third party repair shop, recommended by the insurer so I will definitely be going back there to discuss their paint preparation techniques.

thankfully, using colored wax on the rockers has helped considerably. You can only see the stuff in certain lights......At least it's galvanized, so it's not rusting

when i bought my 02 used, it wasnt that the paint was chipping, it just looks like someone took sandpaper to it, because whenever you scrub the paint with dirt on it, the paint scratches horribly...but i havent really had any damage from road debris anywhere besides my front end

I also havae nice scratch marks from the claws of a local cat who walked on the car. I washed the muddy pawprints off and behold.....he had his claws out. little scratches all over the roof and hood (most came off with some good rubbing, but not all).

: for Nissan paint, once again.

Got the same problems. Welcome to Nissan ownership! I use Maguier's Tech Wax. I doesn't leave the white wax chunks in the chips like cheaper wax does. This spring I'm going to do the clay bar to smooth out any light surface scratches too. Did it on a S-10 years ago and was able to get rid of all the oxydation and most of the surface scraches. For the chips, you have to suck it up and use touch up. I end up spending an our a spring just doing touch up paint.
