retrofitting the projectors that you took out of the H3 headlights wouldn't be a bad idea for fogs 'eh? direct bulb fit.

I have been trying to figure out something to do w/ those, at first I wanted to put them in the high beam position of the headlights, w/ the cutoff shield removed - I had in mounted on the bracket, but there was no way it was going to fit in the housing w/o hacking up the back.

So yea, fogs were the next place I am trying, been working on here and there. I was thinking of hacking off the back of the OEM fogs & fitting them into that housing. But I can see a few problems arising w/ that setup, so I am not sure that would be the best way, & if it doesn’t work I am out a fog light.

so I figure a custom setup might be better, I have been taking my time b/c I want the aesthetics to be right - so far all I have made up is the shroud, I am happy w/ that, still working on a lenses, making them out of flat lexan is going to be a last resort, if I cant find what I want (at a price I want). Ideally I want them to be convex like the OEM fog lenses, I was going to use OEMs but they are slightly smaller and would also need to be trimmed in some places, so that’s out, so I am still looking. Once I get the lens issue out of the way, and I am pleased w/ the way they look the rest, i.e., bracket for mounting and adjustment, and trimming the back of where the fog light goes, won’t be hard.

(unpainted) shroud & projector.

Awesome pics and progress so far! I just realized that you're from Boston too I'll have to see this job in person some time! Good luck with the fogs and tweaking the MDX bulbs.

another update for those interested ,here are are just a couple of the many pics i took, while adjusting the projector, using different #s of washers between the lense cutoffshield and reflector, and adjusting the location of the cutoff shield between thaose washer. I found a setup i am comfortable w/ and am going to (finaly ) re-install the projector, i will try and update the writeup soon.

this was taken in my room w/ the projector @ 10'
no washers........................................... .................................................. ...... 5 washers

these were taken in a very cold parking lot, the unmodified projector is still in the housing on the car while the other is sitting atop the housing, secured & aimed by wrapping it in a towel and closing the hood on it, both headlights were on, to take a picture of one beam i stood in front of and blocked the other, the difference is more apparent in person but notice that in the unmodified pic, it is darker in the center

And 1 final set of picture that i found interesting, and worth posting.
these were taken from above, notice in the unmodified projector the first intensity has a wider angle than the modified projector and tends to flare of towards the edges, the second pattern of intensity is initialy yellow on the unmodified projector also has a wider angle than the modified projector, this may help explain the increase in down the road intensity

how did you get rid of the rectangle on top of the cut off line? you cover it up or just putting those 5 washers got rid of it?

What???????? H3 is a size of bulb. Many cars come with H3 as headlights, Maximas just happen to use them as fogs. H3 does NOT mean foglight, it is just a size.

What is the difference between HID Projectors vs. a Halogen Projector.
Many Newer car claim that they use halogen lights, and the the projector lens make it look as if it is a HID setup? am i right?

I've also read that HID Kits do not come with HID projectors and they only enable you to use an hid light bulb in your car. and u might have to buy the project seperatly.

Also, there was a write ups stating that all HID Kits are not worth the money because they dont work (effective) as well as some of the HIDs that come stock on the new Lexus cars. Any truth to that?

My question is: could i just purchase a halogen projector for my stock halogen lights, instead of using a HID Kit? Will my light output be effected. I want the HID look, but i dont want HID kit cons.

My advice to all newbies who are interested or want to learn more about projectors and HID Kits is to sign up at the HIDPlanet forums and read the HIDPlanet University section. You should also be able to find a hand full of 5th gen/I30/I35 retrofit posts. Thanks.

That does look very nice compared to what you get stock.

Seems if you have a 2000 maxima, you can buy those ebay projector headlamps and just swap out the crappy projector for something a little spicier.

Say a TSX projector or whatever.

But if you have a 2002 maxima with factory xenon, your only options are:
1) Fabricate a back plate to hold a TL bi-xenon projector (or which ever projector you want) and the turn bulb plus the lamp on the top. Plus the additional electronics needed for the projector.
2) Modify the stock 2002 xenon headlamp to accept a projector, which means removing the factory wiring harness and wiring up the junk from the projector which you are using. IE: with a TL bi-xenon projector, you need the TL's ballast and igniter (which might convientely fit in the factory place).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm itching to try this for myself.

Fellow Maxima.org members, I am WAY late on this trend of retrofitting a maxima with HID ligths. I have been contemplating looking into a way to get HIDs for my car, but just recently realized I was already behind!

I would like to get a set built for my 99 Maxima, but do not think I could do it by myself and not mess up $100 worth of light housing! So I would like to contract someone to build it for me, with me supplying the parts. If anyone knows someone that could do it for me (and not for my arm and leg) let me know. I will pay for the person's labor, and supply whatever parts I need to get the HID set built for my car. If they are on the east coast, I would also possibly drive to their location and let them put them in for me. Someone please help a fellow Maxima lover get his car up to date and looking swift!
