Nissan Vehicle Imobilizer System - How good is it?

The idea behind the vehicle immobilizer system sounds great - w/out the coded chip in the key the engine will refuse to start.
How secure will does this make the car in reality? In theory it should be almost foolproof but we all know that in the real world the professional thieves are usually one step ahead of the game . Does this feature really make the car undrivable, or is it in reality just another way of adding a couple seconds to the time it takes a pro to steal the car?

Prolly1 adds a few more minutes... I'm sure they'll find a way to steal your car if they really wanted it.

FWIW, when I called in to add the new Maxima to my auto policy, the ins. co. rep. could tell from the VIN that there was an immobilizer system, and she said "Oh you have one of the good ones with the chip in the key." Hey, if the insurance companies like them, there must be some value there.
