Hey Guys,

Trying to find the right direction on this, have a 2000 SE Cal Spec Auto. Car has 89K on it. I got it with 80K. the coils were gone and so were the plugs. Took care of those, then at 85K the P0420 came on, so I went to the dealer had them reprogram the ECU, it went away, but at 87.5K new code comes up P0430. Guess that is for for bank 2, but cat converter not at optimum???. My question, (since I can smell something bad from the emissions), should I go ahead and do the Cat change? Or do I go and get the dealer to try an reprogram the ECU again.

One more thing, my local shop had reset it for me after reading it, but it (SES light) came back at 88.4K, and today at 88.9K it (SES Light) went out by itself, but the sulphur smell is still there.

What to do????

Update:

Went to my local smog shop, guy has been doing my cars for 10 years or so, he just stands there getting ready to do a pre-inspection and smells the odors and says " your cat is gone, get a new one". My question like everyone else, which one to get? I saw a post a while back for CATCO converters but I cant seem to find a direct fit one..... Dont really want a high flow one, but something better than factory....

LMK what pops in peoples minds.....

thanks

i got the same problem before ..got both codes and updated ECU,sloved P0420 but the 430 still here... i think p0430 can't slove by ECU update,i can't find the TSB ..need to replace a new pre-cat around $400 .I bought an oxygen sensor simulator to fool the CPU to turn off the SES light refer by blackbird!
just don't wanna waste that money to buy a little metal front-precat..

Hmm,

Maybe, but the smell is a strong indicator that the gases are not being processed correctly, so it would seem to point more towards the cat itself.

Anyone else got any idea's???

Mine gets this every once in a while, not sure if I smell the sulfur smell though.
I think this is most likely a case of the SES light actually doing its job properly (as it's intended--reporting real problems to the driver!)

It only comes on maybe a few times a month for me, and I clear it with my OBD-II scantool every time...

If I were u I would go for a smog check to see if everything is fine -- anyway you will have to go for smog check becoz your car is exceeding 5 yrs of life. Just wait for the smog report and if it is alarming then go for the CAT change. I would suggest just living with the code if it does not affect MPG in any way....

I do have the P0420 and looking at options to fooling the ECU....
