Made Black Fake AE Headlights

Well, day off work and got a little bored. I know a few have done the "fake" AE headlights in a variety of colors (mostly black or bronze) but I hadn't seen a black maxima with the black (fake) AE's....so now I have:
(btw, the car is super-dirty since it's 20 degrees out and not been washed in 2 weeks!)

...and another pic that I took at the Naval Academy yesterday, posted just for the hell of it

The Home Depot Mod King strikes again!! Looks very good. Any more close-up pics? The 2nd pic has a lot of glare.

What type of paint did you use?

I'll take more pics when it warms up!!
I didn't use paint, I used the "rub-off" method (the chrome paint on them rubs right off with warm water and a rag)...so this mod cost exactly $0.00

We don't have chrome parts to rub off....

You have to paint it to get this look.

Darn. Yeah, it's not chrome, but I thought that maybe it would be black under the silver/grey finish around the lights.

Unfortunately, I was rushing to get it done so I could drive the car out to dinner tonight! ...so didn't stop to take pics of how-to
BUT....Here is the write-up I used, it's a very good one and I followed it precisely (it's about 8 posts down the thread):

The lenses are smoked (AND very, very dirty)....I did this because my lenses were so scratched/scuffed up and looked bad. I decided I really don't like the smoked fogs though, and will be changing them out as soon as I can get my hands on one more new lens and replace them.... Also with them smoked, you can't see my sweet Lexus bulb covers

Great job as always.

But there is one Max here with an absolutely flawless set of custom AEs.

As you can see, the plastic lense itself is painted as well. It looks so damn hot.

Do I have to take the front bumper off my 2000 to get the headlights off? Also, I don't really understand why you have to heat the headlights to get them to open and close. I want to do this as soon as I understand it.

no, you do not have to take off the bumper to remove the headlights. all you need to remove are the bulbs themselves, the 2 bolts on top, and give it a decent pull. heating them loosens the sealant that holds the headlight together.

thats exactly how i did it. you may have to put them back in for longer if it starts to cool before you can get the headlight open... i reccommend using icelandmaxima's writeup for clarification

I like the rub off method better than the stock AE's... i'm disapointed in the stock AE's I got.. they look bronze like... errr.. the "rub off" method is sooooo much better looking IMO.... I just bought some headlights... but I should have done the rub off method.. oh well.. anyone know if I can rub off AE to be black? :-)
