Best 5-speed?

Best 5 speed below $25k
That would depend very much on what it is that you are after. At one point I would have said VW GTi/Jetta with either the 1.8t or VR6 (1.8t is more tunable for less), because there is practicality (seating and trunk space) on a smaller car which gives a good power to weight ratio. Having had one, that was built by a one armed guy on a Friday afternoon after quaffing one or two to many Becks in the Brauhaus at lunchtime, I wouldn't touch 'em with a barge pole.
I did look at the Toyota MR2, but you can't carry anything with you at all, so while it would be a fun car as a toy, you couldn't even do a weekend away in it unless you're by yourself which kind of negates the point. The other beauty is the Lotus Elise, but you can't get that here.
I bought my Max because it was the only "performance sedan" that I COULD get in a manual that was under $25k, because I require a certain degree of practicality and a boat load of POWER!!!!
However, an Alfa Romeo dealer has just opened up the street from me and they do a kick *** couple with very sweet engines - don't look to closely at the bodywork though, it may fall off in fright!

Well, you can get a BASE Audi A4 for just under $25k. I don't know how good the transmission is on it though. My vot goes to the Prelude. Paying a lot of money doesn't necessarily get you a better transmission. The S2000's 6spd is right up there with the best.

I've driven SOO many cars in my life from 91 M3 to C430; from Hyundai to Mazdas.
To be honest, Honda makes the best manual transmission in the whole wide world. First, most of their high performance cars are equiped with the high revving Vtec engine. To accomdate wider bandwith, they use a close ratio gear box for their sports/sporty cars.
In my opinion, Integra Type-R has the best 5 Speed the world has to offer! The second is Civic Si-R (which I assume Civic Type-R would be even better). Prelude SH is extremely good also (Prelude Type-S should be even better).
Integra GS-R is just as good.
In addition to the question, the Honda S2000 and the NSX Type-S is probably one of the with the best transmission in the world. Porsche and Ferrari doesn't even come close to Honda's gear box.
However, the lower end Civics' gear box is some what near the performance Altimas and Sentras.

That would be one or two too many Coronas because I thought the Jettas were made in Mexico??

I can't comment on the Jettas, it was the (Golf) GTi that I had and that was manufactured in Munich. My Beetle on the other had is Mexican and although it has had a lot of problems too, not as many as my GTi did - and also it is basically my wifes car and she is not as **** as me when it comes to car problems.
