He and and his wife can go save the earth if they want to.... "oh what feeiling.... Toyota" Tell him to go find a set and buy the max. It gets ok gas mileage, looks great, will run forever (with proper maintenance) goes like a bat out of he!! (for when they want to pass some gas sucking SUV on the highway), has a big rear window (for all the Greenpeace, save the earth stickers) and has plenty of room for a growing family. Good luck on bringing him into the fold....

Haha Ian that's pretty funny. So gas mileage is king huh? Well two can play at that game. SHE is clearing willing to pay about $15 grand or so right? Tell the guy to buy an older Camry 4 cylinder for about $10 grand. Will still run forever. The use the rest to buy a Harley. Both get good gas mileage right?? hehe

I didn't say I was completely done trying to convince him....but he went home and asked his wife and she flipped out.

I mean - his wife is the ultimate picture of the "liberal fanatic left" that people think of when they think of Seattle. I wouldn't be surprised if she planned the WTO riots herself!

But I'm still trying. Since he's my co-worker, there's lines I can't cross conversationally.

So I'll just keep plugging away and hope he makes the good decision.

Based on what you have told me so far, it does not sound like the Maxima is the best choice for this guy.

how about a buggy and whip? He can pull her around while she cracks the whip. WHHHHHHHHIIIIPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH

better yet, has anyone developed a car that runs on shame?

I purchased my 2000 Maxima to replace a Camry (similar vintage), so I've owned both. The Camry was a 4, and did get better mileage, but we both enjoy the Maxima much more. It is fun to drive, offers far better handling, and overall, a much more enjoyable car.

Room wise, they're very similar. If mileage is that important to you, go for the Camry, but you'll be hard pressed to get 30 mpg around town.

Even my wife, who is not a driving enthusiast, appreciates driving the Maxima.

Ha... Yea I can reflect back and remember my Dad's sweet 280Z... And more specifically when my Mom learned she was pregnant with my lil' sis, and thereby forced my Dad into trading the Z in for a brand new Chevy Celebrity Eurosport. The Celebrity I can reflect on as "sucking hardcore".

I've got only one kid and can't imagine using a corolla to cart the family around. He "needs" a maxima if for no other reason that it would be superior in an accident to a corolla and is a more comfortable and large vehicle. That's the practical side. Unpractically it's a more enjoyable and faster car to drive.

IANSW , lets face it maybe you don't need friends like that! if he is not going to get a max, then kick him to the curb! what kinda friend is he if he doesn't get a max! you really don't need people like that in your life! let's say you guys wanna go out , and he wants to drive, would you as a human being feel more comfortable in a camry/corolla or if he had a maxima? just tell him you don't want his friendship, it's not worth it- you probably have a huge headache over all of this now dont ya? hey, don't worry you still have all of us here as your "real" buddy!

j/k bout that bro . i thought you may need a laugh! look we are all gonna tell you for the last time though- for your buddy's benefit - tell him ....

Everyone has different priorities and if the Camry does the same basic job and fits him then so be it.

Here is a compromise for your friend to save money. Forget the 5th Gen and find the best deal possible on a low-mileage 4th Gen. I have a 95 that I am still very pleased with. Maybe he can find a sweet 97 or 98 that is well maintained at the right price.

Tell him to offset the mileage difference by a) consolidating shopping trips, b) walking to the store with his wife and two brats to share quality time together, and c) cut back in other areas of his life, less tofu, lol!

There ain't nothin wrong with tofu... Hahaha.... but I would take my fat **** steak anyday. But seriously, thinking that by getting better MPG, you are doing a favor for the environment is ludacris. It doesn't even scratch the damn surface. He should get a maxima, it is overall a better car, whoopdy-flippin-doo if it doesn't get as good of gas mileage, it is safer, a better buy, more enjoyable, roomier, it looks better and it performs better. Tell him to look at lower gas mileage as a sort of "opportunity cost"
