Cat-back exhaust poll

For those if you with aftermarket cat-back exhaust, please let me know how you like it. I am mostly concerned with sound, but also performance. I'm looking at Greddy, Cattman, HKS, Stillen, and custom. Thanks for your help.

Hm...... Don't know if this helps, I got a custom one from a local shop that my friends know. They stripped my exhaust system from the cat, and basically replaced it with SS piping with 2 1/4 opening and I picked my own exhaust. I went for an oval shaped one so it'll look different than every car on the road. I notice a little bit of a low end gain but not too much. I just like the way it sounds when I drive. The 2 1/4 opening with my smaller exhaust opening doesn't give it that loud noise, but some aggressiveness which was what I was looking for. My cousin's accord has 2 1/2 piping and dual exhausts, and its a lil RICE and loud. He's gotten pulled over twice by cops for noise already. But I'm happy with my setup, installed, SS and still less than half the price of the Greddy.

Cat- back Exhausts

I decided on a custom exhaust end due to the limited number of choices of cat back exhausts for the 5th gen Max. So I found something from Hayame that I liked and had my friend at the local garage install it. The job costs $200 labor included. I like to have a different look from other Max's. I think there are too many 5th gen Max's with the Greddy EVO installed, but I guess this poll with tell ??

You'll find that many people have left the GReddy scene.... most have Cattman, Frankencar, stock with aftermarket b-pipes, etc.... I just sold mine a month ago to get a Frankencar... love it...

HKS and Stillen don't make cat-backs for our Max's do they? HKS only has an axle back and Stillen has y-pipes and an axle back.... I'm pretty sure of that... another thing is that ya forgot Frankencar in the poll, its gotten quite popular and should be on of the main choices.... just what I think...

Yeah I did forget frankencar. Also, Stillen is only rear section, I'm not sure about HKS. Did those of you with the Frankencar notice any performance gains or just looks and sound?

Stillen and HKS are rear section. My Greddy SP is a little loud for me but not as loud as HKS. I believe Frankencar catback is the quietest.

Does anybody actually have Frankencar? Also, how is the sound level of the Cattman (cat-back)?

So true. It's a great misconcepetion when it comes to adding horsepower. But it gives more of a performance feel to the driver rather than adding serious gains. I'll still get an exhaust (planning a custom 2.5" catback with either Borla or Magnaflow dual outlet muffler, btw) but i'd rather start with something adding higher gains for the $$, such as with ECU, grounding kit, then intake, etc. Just my .02

I've got a budget B-pipe w/ a Magnaflow resonator and a Powertech 1011 rear section. I like the sound. I'll try to make some clips soon.

Umm.... they sound... good?

Just kidding... kinda... but its hard to desribe it really... I'll try... the Franken does not drone and sounds pretty much like stock except for a slightly lower tone; a very subtle low note. This is at idle and lower speeds... it opens up nicely at WOT but its not obnoxious; just enough to know that it isn't stock. I had the GReddy before and it drones pretty loud until yo'ure over 2500 rpms, then its fine, and you can definitely hear it... its nice and I miss the throatiness that it had.

I have clips of Cubanto's Max with the Frankencar before and after headers... if ya want em, PM me your email address and I'll send em to ya.

Btw, I don't quite understand what ya mean by "sound quality" since I don't think exhausts can really be judged that way... besides, its all so personal...

Hey guys, I have a Cattman Y-pipe with 2.5 " B-pipe with resonator + a PowerTech muffler with dual 4" tips, this set-up is louds too louds perhaps, so I'll be ordering a Cattman muffler to replace the PowerTech. I can say for shure the car has more power then with the stock exhaust, I've race with stock maxima and took them pretty easily.

Is it worth it for me to get the Frankencar cat-back and a high-flow cat but leave the headers and y-pipe alone? I know it will look and sound good, but I also want a little more power/performance. What does everybody think?

yea I have heard some greddy clips, does it sound better when coupled with a Y-pipe or does it drone more, and I am not a fan of the big can look, but if it sounds good then i guess its worth it..and its Greddy...I really like cattman too

Just because its GReddy doesn't mean its that good... my aluminized steel EVO rusted more than my OEM cat-back (which is also alum steel) in a shorter period of time... then again, the new GReddy's are all stainless... either way... the brand name doesn't say much for quality all the time... Cattman and Frankencar are the best 2, IMO, and many .Org members will vouch for em... unless ya go custom or ya throw different pieces together, but watch out for compatibility issues when its comes to fitment... (see http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=369323 for a specific example).

I'm leaning heavily towards Cattman after having a long discussion with Brian Catts. I'm off the Frankencar idea. Anybody here have the Cattman cat-back without the headers and y-pipe?

Quality of the Franekncar isn't as good as I thought, plus there is no O2 sensor port.

From personal experience of owning both sets or just from opinions?

Probably because your car is Fed Spec.

There is no O2 sensor port in the Frankencar exhaust. It has nothing to do with cal or fed spec on my car. I have not owned either, I have gathered facts, specs and opinions from different people. That's just my opinion (that Frankencar exhaust is not as good as far as quality than the Cattman).

My fault. I was referring to that if you had fed spec, you needed to weld a O2 sensor bung before installation

Yeah, thats what I mean. I do have a fed spec, and the Frankencar doesnt have the port, while the Cattman does. I didn't know that fedspec and calspec were different in those ways, I assumed cals would have more sensors.

Ok, then let me ask this. Of the Frankencar owners, are you disappointed with the quality? Also, like Charliejag, I also want to know who just has the Cattman exhaust (just cat-back) and their opinion sound wise. 60% of my driving is highway and don't want an annoying hum at these speeds. Sort of like it the way the G35 sounds, you know its their at low speeds, barely audible on the highway, gets your attention at WOT.

My question would be why are you into getting a new exhaust? If it is for sound then just buy a new muffler. If it is for performance then I would suggest just buying a y-pipe and b-pipe. 90% of the gain in HP from any aftermarket exhaust is because of the use of mandrel bent tubing. The maxima has a great muffler already. I do not recommend anybody change their entire exhaust on a maxima for performance. For you a y-pipe and b-pipe would address the majority of the bottleneck of your stock exhaust. Think about it before wasting your money. I wish somebody would have talked me out of the whole catback idea 8 months ago. I am stuck with a louder exhaust, very little gain in HP, and I am out $600. Think about it.

Either way I would go with either cattman. A little overpriced but you will not be let down. I paid $260 for my PR CAI from cattman and did not even receive a cleaning kit. Had to purchase seperate. Good quality parts and assurance from defects.
