i remember hearing this a while back and did some testing of my own. i used my laptop and harrison obd2 software to perform data log of my timing. i had also bumped up my timing with the consult 2 and wanted to make sure it was still there. obviously i cannot speak for every car but my timing was right on target no matter at wot, cruising or at idle. i did notice that my timing slightly advanced when the ac was turned on which is nice because my compressor is bypassed but i still get the bump in timing.
i only run 93 and actually was a point where my main cat was bumping the undercarraige due to the headers pushing it more towards the passenger side. that thumping/knocking noise did not affect my timing at all. i know the knock sensor was/is very problematic in the 4th gen. 3.0 but i would think some of here would be reporting failing knock sensors if it was as big an issue.
