Ignition Key Won't Turn--Help!!!

Alright, my maxima had this problem occasionally but only when I locked the steering column. Well my dad's 02 is having the same problem, the key won't turn at all, but the steering column isn't locked. What's the deal? And how much will it cost....please help because my dad is freaking being that I was the last one who drove it.

have you tried rotating the steering wheel from left to right while trying to turn the key?

try using a different key or use the same one with another one by the ignition.

Is it an automatic? Make sure the gear shift is in park. Try wiggling it around a bit too.

you could try rubbing a little graphite lube on your key.
could it be a park neutral switch issue?

I think you can still turn the key with that problem, it just won't start the car.

heh, well i found out what happened. My dad used my step moms maxima key iin the ignition and blew the little plungers or whatever theyre called inside the key cylinder. He had it towed to the dealer and its gonna cost 485 after all the labor. But does this sound right...they said that after changing the lock cylinder they'd have to reprogram his ignition switch and everything. It just seems like a load of crap.

The lock cylinder has pins and springs inside of it. I don''t know how much labor is involved but the steering wheel may have to be removed to replace the key switch.

how could using a different key blow the lock cylinder. But if they do replace the cylinder, then they might just have to reprogram unless they could key a replacement cylinder that matches the old key. Funny how your dad blamed you when he broke it in the first place.

My girl just had the same problem with her neon. It was the cylinder.

I think I'm going to lube my ignition cylinder. I noticed my "valet" key catching the tumblers when I used it the other day. I guess after 4 1/2 year with the same key, the old key got worn in. And I don't have anything attached to my ignition key except for the key fob remote. I heard a long time ago, extra weight on the key will accelerate key and lock core wear.
