reverse light project
reverse light project
hey everybody... crazy question here but would it be possible to wire up some old headlight bulbs i have to my reverse lights? i'm trying to make them brighter for better visibility when i back up in my car. the ones i'll probably use are the same size as the max hi beams. i'm pretty handy with wiring and stuff, but i'm wondering if you think it would cause any problems. i guess i might blow a fuse but what else could go wrong? i don't want to cause any permanent damage if possible. comments and suggestions appreciated! thanks..
headlight bulbs used as reverse lights? man how much light do you need to see to back up? i mean do you drive in reverse for more than 1 block? - i would just recommend using hyper white revrerse bulbs ans that should be plenty of light- forget rewiring everything to get a headlight bulb back there , then you may have problems with the fuses, not only that you have to get the connector to fit back there to hold the bulb in place - imo not worth it, find some hyperwhite reverse bulbs - cheap mod and worth it too, prbly like $10 bux max!
Yes, you can use an old H-3 Bulb. You have to carefully strip away the plastic housing so that the contact points and bulbs remain, the fit it in. I know this sounds like a rather vauge description...which it is! There is a member whom did this that posted about within the past 24 hours. I read it around 5am, so...I know it's on here somwhere!!!!
So in summation, yes...it can be done with an H3, but I can't give you specifics.

I did the H3 backup bulb mod last week. You can't get any brighter than an H3 bulb. Looks awesome! The bulb doesn't fit exactly but it sits in the housing good enough to light every time I throw it in reverse. You must carefully take apart the H3 bulb to expose the 2 leads. You also have to use a pair of needle nose pliers and chip away some of the glass bulb around the leads. I then took each lead wire and bent a little hook into them with the pliers. That will make sure the bulb stays in the housing. Make sure to wipe the bulb clean before lighting.
sweet! i never considered using the H3 bulbs instead of my old hi-beams. duh! i have a spare set of those too since i upgraded the bulbs to silverstars. i'll try it out, hopefully i can deconstruct the leads part of the bulb good enough. thanks!
p.s. hi macalert
...the VB is doing great. never had a problem, it's a great mod for autos.

if you go to home depot or lowes, go to the light bulb section and look for quartz/halogen T4 (I think) 50w 12v bulbs. Looks just like h3 without the metal cage. and only around less than $5.http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=370469

Anyone ever tried a rear fog light mod using a led of the same wattage as the brake lights. I am about to try this mod but in the end I will only have one reverse light and the other light will be a rear foglight which will be used in FOG ONLY or heay snow especially with drifting conditions to avoid a rear collision for the stupid people who follow too close even when the can hardly see.
