Clutch and tranny going?

Hello guys..
I got almost 100k on my Max. Original clutch, and feels like it is about to go. It makes whinning noise just a bit when engaging in 1st gear, but that mostly happens when the car is cold. Did anyone experience that? Also it feels like it takes very short distance for clutch to engage. I can almost drop it in from 2nd to 3rd, without feeling much of a jerk. Can the clutch be adjusted to get some extra life out of it?

Also, i changed gear oil, and put in wrong one, GL-5, and then in two weeks put in MT-90 GL-4, the right one. Now its harder to shift to 2nd gear, even when the car is warm. Could I have messed it up? Or maybe I didn't fill it up right? Can't check this week, too much snow on the back yard here in Boston.

Thanks for all advice.

The whinning noise I think is common. At least I've noticed it on my 2k max for a long time, but only when I'm letting out on the clutch really slow...I've especially noticed it when going up a hill backwards in reverse.

Also, I would think that as the clutch wears out, the pedal will have to come out more for your clutch to engage, so I dont think that the short distance you talk about is a problem.

As for feeling the jerk between 2nd and 3rd...this could be because your clutch is not dis-engaging all the way, and shouldnt have anything to do with the life of your clutch. This might be because you have problems with your clutch master or slave cylinder. Ensure you have enough fluid in your clutch master cylinder. If you think your clutch is not dis-engaging all of the way, a good test would be to put the clutch in, put the car in first gear, and let off of the brake (make sure your handbrake is not on either), and light press the gas. If the car tries to move forward any, then your clutch is not disengaging all of the way and you will definitely wear out your clutch pre-maturely.

Overall, your clutch should last mor ethan 100K miles if used properly, especially if you have alot of highway miles. If your clutch is not dis-engaging all the way, then definitely take it in to have it adjusted, or fixed so you don't have to replace your clutch too soon!

  1. Throw out bearing going. Mine is "whurling" too and it's only got 61K (city driving though).
  2. That's Nissan's trannies and MT-90's characteristics to you. The only answer is to double clutch. Matching speeds doesn't quite smooth it.

Well, the noise that I described and one I was getting all the time from when the car was almost new going backwards are the same. But now i get it when letting go the clutch in first slowly. Its just that I noticed big difference after I changed the fluid, I don't think that driving for two weeks and GL-5 would ruine it that much. I meant that shifting from any gear into the 2nd gear is hard and not smooth.

Has anyone changed their clutch? I don't think its that hard, i know you have to take the axle and trany out..but other then that it should be OK.?
Thanks

You'll be okay on the tranny. GL-5 isn't going to eat up anything in a few weeks, but do take it out.

In any case, the RL gear oil will feel pretty similar to what you have now so don't expect miracles. The MT-90 feels really good when cold, but there is a transition point during warmup where all the gears get really notchy (much worse than OEM fill ever felt). Once warm, there's still noticeable notchiness into 3rd. IMO it only works better than the OEM oil when cold, but that's it. I'm thinking the next time I change the gear oil, I may go semi syn instead of full syn so I can hopefully have "the best of both worlds."

Honestly, I don't know. The BITOG demo of the Schaeffer's 267 gear oil is pretty impressive. Also, the Porschephiles swear by Swepco 201. Both are supposedly GL-4/5. For me, the issue is that these only come in 80W90 and, in Chicago, I'd like the extra 15 or so degrees of pour temps 75W90 gives.
