advice i am getting MAF sensor

Guys i have an 00 it has the slow/surging.lurching problem that i had put on about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 posts before. I am really tempted to buy a Mass air flow sensor from jerry-rome nissan for $95.....if I get it and give it a shot do i need a ECU reprogram? the nissan guy at the stealership i talked to didnt know anything about a reprogram only his "85.00/hour scam" so if I get it and seeing that its fairly easy to install WHERE AND HOW DO I GET AN ECU REPROGRAM? How much $$? Thanks for your support

I have left mine unplugged for 3 days in a row and nothing bad .......that's what you have to do if you don't want to pay the $$$ to reset the ECU... it is safe

i juss replaced my MAF sensor in my 2k maxima cuz the car wouldnt even idle. Lemme tell u.......my car runs like neva before.......it pulls so hard even harder than when i got the car. amazing what a lil POS sensor can do to ur engine performance.

I didnt reset my ECU yet cuz i dunno if should.

I did notice a slight surging still but the rpm needle doesnt surge like it used to.

everything so far so good.

You dont want a ecu "RESET" you want a ecu "REPROGRAM" which is completely different. Only the dealer can perform a ecu reprogram which changes the way your ecu responds to the new MAF. $80 roughly

Just replaced the maf on my 2k a month or so ago and it fixed my hesitation problems. So far everythings good and car pulls harder just as you said. I also have noticed an increase in gas mileage. I don't think you have to get your ecu reprogramed but some people recommend it.

I know this doen't go to well with the MAF topic, but do you have to reset the ecu after putting on headers, because thats what I heard?

I called DaveB to get a new MAF (I too have hesitation and low idle sometimes stall the engine).

I asked about the ECU reprogram. I told me its not necessary for the new MAF install. HOWEVER, it is still a good idea to have the ECU reprogrammed to the latest version, not for the MAF itself, but for everything on the car. Just like getting the latest version of Office is good, or flashing your BIOS to the latest version is a good thing in your PC.

Regarding the installation of the MAF, DaveB told me to "unplug negative" of battery, unplug old MAF, plug in new MAF, wait overnight, plug in negative of battery back in, roll out and have fun.

this will reset the ECU and afterwards, the ECU will fall in a "reajust" stage for a couple of miles. Thats probably what happened to you Y2KMaxSE the following days after you got your ECU reseted.

I havent tried it yet. When I do Ill get back to you.

yea thats what happened to me...went into readjust mode but i think because of the bad sensor it is slower now cant get the rpms over 5K no matter WHAT and it took about 300 miles after i reset it to be quick enough to SAFELY drive on the highway. right now with bad sensor the cars strongest points (5spd) are about 20-40 MPH 2nd gear and 45-60 MPH (3rd gear)

I had a bad hesitation problem, and loss of power. The dealer said the maf was bad and replaced it. (I know they are not lying because I put it one of those scam air filters with the oil, and there was oil residue inside the maf housing. Stay away from those!) They charged about $250 for the new maf and install.

They also said reprogramming the ecu was a good idea. Of course they did it for free along with advancing my timing. I dont think all dealers will comp you like that, unless you buy about 10 cars from them like my family has.

That was about a year and 30000 miles ago, and my Max still runs like the wind.
