Cracked Windshield question

Greets,

A rock or bb pellet cracked my windshield this past Saturday on Jericho tpke. The impact/crack is approximately the size of a dime in diameter. I spoke to my insurance company and they say they will fix it if it's like I say (a dime). They use Safelite which I hear pretty good things about.

My questions for ppl who have had this done or seen this is.
- After it's repaired by safelite, how visible or invisible will the impact be?

- Should I just try to get a new windshield? If so, NYC orgers please recommend a place with good or OEM quality glass with decent balance vs price. My insurance "gecko" says I'm not covered for a new glass option, so this part will be straight out of my pockets.

i don't know about florida but in NY glass coverage is an option. i don't remember how much i pay for it (i have geico too) but i've had to use it twice when my windshield cracked on my 01 altima back when i had it. it was worth every penny. i havent taken the coverage off since.

What I mean is in Florida the windshield is Free by law if it is cracked...or whatever, the insurance company cannot charge you for it (increase rate)

The safelite repair is covered, but if I want a new one that's on me.

XGaSpAcHo,

How visible or invisible was the repair? Or was it a new shield?

it was a new windshield. you may be able to get a new one if you complain enough.

Man I would make sure that my insurance company paid for a broken windshield. Why do we pay insurance if something that inexpensive, as compared to other damanges, couldn't be replaced? If you get good reviews on safelite, I say go with it. However, there is nothing that beats a brand new spankin, and not to mention clear, windshield.

I chose to not have the coverage in order to keep my premiums down

you can't make them pay anything if you don't have glass coverage. it's separate. it doesn't cost much extra so i've always had it on my policy.

if you didnt specificaly ask for it then you probably dont have it. i added that and the emergency roadside assistance to my policy. the assistance thing only costs me about an extra $12 a year and covers any car i'm driving.

Does your insurance cost go up if you get the windshield repaired? I have Geico and have enough chips that drive me crazy!

I believe you have to have full coverage to get the windshield replacement benefit.

Hi Org'ers,

To answer some of the questions so far:

- If you have full covreage, no you don't necessarily have glass coverage. I have full with geico and I don't have DED w/glass which would cover a replacement instead of repair.

- I got the repair done this weekend it got rid of some of the impact marks and is very clear but the starburst type deeper spikes remain visible. I will post the before and after pictures later.

- DED w/glass adds an extra $40 a yr to my insurance. I may get it after I replace this windshield.

The new question is, I think I want to replace the glass, cause the chip is right in front of me and I find my eye focusing on it involuntarily when it passes view.

- Does anyone know who makes the OEM glass (PPG, Vista"think this is the logo on mine", pro-lite, etc ) ?

The full coverage deal applies in Florida regardless of your insurer. They will either repair or replace your windshield if it gets a bullseye chip in it.

Here's the chip before the safelite process:

Here it is after the safelite process:

Can someone who had to pay out of their own pockets quote me some of the prices they paid. Most places say the OEM looks like vista glass and say vista glass will be around $400
