'00 Maxima has hicup when cold. Help!

My '00, 5-speed Maxima runs great when warm, but first thing in the morning when it is cold it doesn't do so well.

The car is kept in the garage overnignt. I ususally start it up, put my seatbelt on and then back out of the garage. I don't spend any time warming it up, but do take it very easy (low revs) until I see the temp gauge start to rise. Normally it runs fine in the morning.

But, lately when I shift into 3rd gear, the engine cuts out and the car is bucking all over the place. it is at the dealer right now, and has been for two days while they try to duplicate the symptoms. The service guy just called and said it did it once for them, but not long enough to get a diagnoses. No engine light, errors codes, etc. The spark plugs only have about 10K on them.

What are the symptoms of bad coils?

Any ideas? I'm picking it up at noon today. Unfixed.

rough idle

My '00 se neede coils just recently. It ran rough at times, then threw a code and the light went out after 3 days. I had the codes read at AZ, they cam up with the code associated with the coil problem. After install of new coils car the engine ran smoother and pulled better.

My MAF sensor was just replaced a few months ago. I just picked the car up form the dealer. He said their was no fault codes triggered. I did mention the coil issue to him, but he said a bad coil would trigger a code.

I'll wait for it to get worse before taking it back to them.

Did you personally replace the MAF or is this what the dealer who just sold you the car tell you?

Its not the coils, its something with intake. I just replaced coils and plugs, and car runs smoother, much smother and stronger on high rpms and low rpms when warm. But, when cold, it doesn't feel so good, does hick up. My MAF was replaced 4 months ago, so I dunno what it could be. I wonder it if needs to be reprogrammed, cause I suspect that fuel cut TSB issue.

I am the original owner of the car. The MAF was replaced by the dealer @ about 65K miles. I don't know if he reprogramed the CPU. Since then I've replaced the spark plugs. The car now has about 70K miles on it.

They were not able to duplicate my complaint, so their was nothing they could do about it. They said to bring it back when it gets worse.

I have been having a similar problem as you. My car runs great when warm. When I first start it up in the morning it bucks a little bit until the car warms up. It doesn't seem to be getting worse and actually seems to be getting better as the weather is becoming warmer. I just replaced my maf 2 months ago and I guess I could try changing my plugs to see if that helps. Any other suggestions of what I could do to defeat this problem?

Same EXACT thing here.....

It seems to dog until 2800rpm, then lunge forward to 3500rpm or so. Sucks, since I try and keep it below 3000rpm until warm, but it really doesn't care to go until you get over 2800rpm or so.

Is your bucking around the same 2800-3000rpm?

I was having the same problem and just installed a new MAF, which cured the problem. When I started my car when it was cold, it would buck severly and hesitate. I think I also need new coils, but I am going to drive the car for a while to make sure.

This is the exact same issue I was having. Since switching out the MAF last weekend it has since stopped!

I think this problem is a combination of the coils and MAF. Nissan quality is great!

Same here... my car doesn't like moving in the morning, but after its warmed up it runs fine. I also have a check engine light on though... but i think the cel is from a bad O2 sensor. I'm planning on getting the code from AutoZone next week. How much can a bad O2 sensor effect gas mileage?

Also while on this topic... when starting your car have you guys ever had the rpm stay at 100rpm for like 5 seconds then finally go normal to ~900rpm? Happened to me a couple times... what is the cause of this?

Thanks...I'm convinced it's time with not even 40K on it.

Did you have the ECU flashed also?

I've replaced my coils and MAF. When driving off on the 1st start of the day, my car seems to have no power on the low end. This usually happens after the car has sat for a while and I drive off. Happens during the day sometimes also. And yes, I do let my car warm up. Seems like the car is straining for power some times, and to make matters worst, it hesitates to change into gear. I've had the 1-2 shift WORKED ON, supposely. Haven't had the TCM replaced, but it shifts fine from 3-4. I put seafoam in my tank last summer and in the engine. Jiffy lube cleaned the injectors via the vacuum hose and yes, there was a smoke out. Valvoline cleaned the throttle body for me. Whats left?
