Is it just me? ROAD NOISE

I'm sorry i've mentioned this before...

On the road over 15 mph, there is a loud humming noise coming from the firewall. Is it because there's plastic only covering the wheelwell? This noise is LOUD. its not my brand new touring tires, and there are times when i need to turn the radio down.

Does anyone else experience this deafening humming noise?

I had a humming from my right firewall when I installed new Sumo HTR+ tires about a year ago. Couldn't find what was causing it; took it back to the the tire shop and they switched out the front tires with another brand for testing and the humming was then completely gone. If the humming started with the new tires, then the tires are probably the culprit. Why, don't know, but I do know how annoying the humming sound can be.

I have the worst road noise from the door seal by the rear windows. Its pure highway wind noise. Its the most annoying thing. Its been that way since new.

although this doesnt have anything to do with the original topic...look in the how-to's in the 5th gen forum to see how to fix that...its REALLY easy and cheap.

This is common and an easy fix. Read the stickies.

As for the road noise, could be the tires due to different hardness (tread wear rating) or tread pattern. Also make sure that if the tires are directional (built to spin only one direction) they are mounted the correct way on the wheel. Also make sure that your tire pressure is correct.

i had this prob with the stock potenza's too. Got a LITTLE better with touring tires. Its so loud obvious, it must be just me. I think i noticed somethng, when i veer right, its a lot less. I'll do a wheel alignment and see what happens.

could also be from a bad wheel bearing...a common problem on the maxima.

To reduce road noise I:
- put dynamat (well, Tsunami, a cheaper version) on the floor of the passenger front leg area (under the carpet) and the metal under the back seats
- sprayed rubberized foam undercoating all over the front AND back of the plastic splashguards in the wheelwells. To do the backsides you have to take them off which is a PITA, but with them on you can at least do the front sides (the side closest to the wheel).

these two things greatly reduced road noise.

but, road noise was decreased more when I switched from Falken 512's to Toyo Proxes 4.....car is really quite quiet on the highway now except for wind noise...

And the winner is ........ sloppymax and irish44j!! (usually on point needless to say)

Wheel bearing has gone bad, right side. quoted $200 to repair which will be money well spent. So it basically is just my car and not the maxima design.

The best fix I found was the **** on my center council that says "volume" in the center of it. Takes care of the wind noise in no time!
