clunky sound in right rear

I have a 2000 Maxima SE with about 55K on it. I've been driving it in upstate NY where there are some pretty bad potholes.

I've recently been hearing a clunky-clunk sound in the right rear of the car when going over bumps or when the distribution of the car's weight changes. I have an extended warranty that is invalid soon so I want to get whatever it is fixed ASAP.

Hook me up!!

Any suspension mods?

Most likely it’s your exhaust piping hitting the suspension.

hey

no, no suspension mods. that would make sense if it was the exhaust. could it be anything else?

I have the same problem, take the muffler in your hand and shake it back and forth, if it makes the noise you need to replace the rubber hangers (most likely its the rubber hanger by your cat).

so i grabbed the tip of the muffler and gave it a good shake in all directions and i didn't hear a sound. do you think that if it is the hanger by the cat, that by shaking the muffler, i wouldnt be able to make that part move?

When the cat hanger wears out, the middle of the exhaust piping sags, and part of the piping hits the unibeam on the right side, at least that what happens to my car.

it might be easier than you think...look inside the trunk to where your jack is. your jack might be loose.

I know when I go over speed bumps I somtimes hear my exhaust hit under the bumper I know because I can see where it is hitting. Look for a visual sign.
