Instead of Turning Rotors......

Have any of you tried fixing your warped rotor problem by using a more aggressive pad like on the StopTech site? If so, what pads did you use, and how did this work for you vs. having the rotors turned? Also, have you tried using garnet paper when you first notice that your rotors are warped? For those that believe that you should get new pads when you get rotors turned, wouldn't this be a good alternative that requires a little less work (since you don't have to take the rotors off and take them to the dealer/napa/autozone, etc.), while saving a few dollars?

The StopTech pages below for those that haven't seen them:

Doing this stuff doesn't work with warped rotors. It's like taking aspirin because you have the sh*ts.

Just buy a couple of brembo blanks for $100, and some new OEM (not key value) pads and shims, and break them in properly. As he said, "There is only one way to prevent this sort of thing - following proper break in procedures for both pad and disc and use the correct pad for your driving style and conditions." Make damn certain from this point on that lugnut torques are always within spec.

There is no shortcut here, once a rotor displays uneven wear or signs of warpage, it's a downward spiral.

Thanks for the opinions on replacement, but since the article pitches another solution for what seems to be a common problem, my interest is more about how many folks have tried it and what they think.......does it not work, or how well does it work? Much appreciated.

When I get off my backside and find my wallet I'll probably get brembo rotors, and haven't figured out the pads yet.

A warped rotor is a warped rotor.

Before he stats cutting, all good technicians will always set the cutters blades so that they barely touch the face of the rotor and/or cut into it just one or two thousands of a inch. They do this to see just how badly it's warped (or is'nt) so that sets the machine to cut the minimum material possible.

If the disk is not warped but rather contaminated as the Stoptech web site suggests, when the tech sets it up on the lathe and does the 'first contact' test, it will test so true that maybe just one or two thousands of an inch per side is all that's needed to make it new again....

If that's the case, the tech will cut the disk using the 'fine cut' feature on the lathe and that's that. And a couple thousands per side of material removed is nothing....

It happened to me more than three times.. they were resusurfaced and nothing two days after that the same problem..... so don't waste your time and money in doing that and get new rotors...... my .02
