Guys, I would like to hear your opinion on my tip situation. I used to have a custom cat-back which was made with a Greddy SP muffler (and tip). After installing my Stillen y-pipe, my car was too loud so I put the stock muffler with dual pencil tips on the car. I was wondering what you guys thought. Here are the pics:

I like the Greddy tip better, but the other one looks fine as well. Win-win situation.

Great taste all the way around. Plus it's cool to see what the pencil tips would look like, exactly, on my car.

Tips

I like dual tips, but pencil ones are to small for me,
and in my opinion don't look that good on a car this size.
just got a dual remus muffler, so i'll post the pics after install.

Ooglie, Inc. Strikes Again!!!

Desert Pearl - Just went to your site and was looking at your pics of your JWT POP-Charger install. I see you, too, had to go with the Ooglie, Inc. Sensor Extender Bracket (P/N OOG-2451). Yours is a lot less Oolglier than mine but it's Ooglie, Inc. brand, nonetheless.

Nice job. Now I feel vindicated for the way I went about it. It's kinda scary how we came up with the same exact idea. Of course, I did mine at 1:30AM with the only thing available to me being an "L" bracket and a handy bench vice. The first time I tried to straighten it out, it poped outta the vice and almost took my eye out.

So, how often do you say "Yeah, but it's a dry heat"?

Stay

Yep, I made mine from some aluminum stock I had lying around. It worked good, but it's gone now. I went back to an OSCAI setup. I figure by doing this I have perserved the Ooglie Factor since I just swapped the Ooglie bracket for an Ooglie intake.

What can I say. Great minds think alike.

All the friggin' time! Regardless 110F is hot either way you look at it.

BTW, these tips are 2.5" ID. They were called 2-5/8" slip-overs. You can find them at just about any muffler shop. These were 9 inches long. The only problem is that the back of the muffler is about 10-11 inches back underneath the car. So, some extensions had to be made. These extensions were made from 2.5" pipe and were "knecked-down" to the size of the stock exhaust tips and welded on.

Here's some more info...

The curved tips were cut off about an inch behind the muffler. The extensions that I mentioned in my last post were necked down to the size of the tip when it exits from the muffler. BTW, our two tips have different sized exits from the stock muffler. These extensions were tack welded onto the stock (now stubby) tips. They were aligned to each other and the car before doing the final weld. Then they were welded onto the muffler. Then the pencil tips were "slipped-over" the extensions. Jesse Belanger and I just slid these around until we decided on how far out they should stick and then he put a small weld on both the top and bottom of the chrome tip. By doing this instead of welding all of the way around the tip, it keeps a nice chrome appearance when viewed from the side. The only part where the chrome turned colors from the weld are on the very top and the very bottom, which you can't see when the car is on the ground.

Have you seen Gone in 60 Seconds yet? Remember that GT500 scene at the end. If you haven't seen that movie, any Dukes of Hazzard will do.... That's me!

All kidding aside, I meant that you couldn't see the welds while the car is on the ground, as opposed to on a lift.

Did you know that variable muffler *Good part of the extra 5HP the AE has) is from the Skyline Parts bin at Nissan. Likely worth equal or more then the G-ready as far as HP gains. I think those tips look fine. Either way, may want to consider keeping the muffler (great power no noise) and find tips that suite your taste.

The muffler on all maxes and i30s is the same. The 5 hp comes from other parts of the exhaust (Y pipe I believe). Someone dynoed and showed little to no gain when removing everything behind the cat so its true that the muffler will probably be the same as the greddy.

punkdork, this is not true. The I30 and the AE Maxima do NOT have the same muffler as the rest of the lineup. Why do you think they are the same? Did you look at the part numbers?

Also, I think it was a feature in edmunds that indicated the variable muffler was from a Skyline GTR.

Yeah it is true. I didn't look at the partnumbers, someone else did. The max muffler is from the skyline too.

Here's a couple links that back this up:

Actually your smart@ss comment did work. I actually deleted my second post just before replying to your message. I figured I'd be a smart@ss too!

Just another side note... I didn't get the "Greddy" cat-back expecting any performance gains. I was mainly getting it for the looks and the sound. It was exactly the sound I was looking for, until I installed the Y-pipe. Then it was too loud and I chose to fix it by reinstalling the stock muffler with tips. Basically it came down to looks vs performance... the Greddy possibly looks a little better than the dual pencils, but I got over 15hp with the Y-pipe and nothing with the Greddy.... Bye-bye Greddy!

All of this was answered in one of my earlier posts. Check it out and lemme know if you need more info.

Oh yeah, the cost should be around $60 including the tips. These tips are pretty inexpensive... like $10ea. I can't give an exact figure because I had Belangers make the entire rear section with the stock muffler.

Many Thanks !!!

I just wanted to thank you for your idea and install tips. I had two pencil tips w/ rolled edges attached today. I had muffler painted (black) so spot welding will not show. The tips make a HUGE difference. They only charged 40.00 and did it on the spot !!! (Muffler Shop in Delray Bch, Fl)

My Two piece wheels (18") were backordered till next Saturday so I cannot complete the package as of yet. Now if only a chrome emergency brake pull could be found for our 5th gens!!!!

Thanks again !!!!!

Not sure I'm reading this correctly so I'll ask... did you get the pencil tips at the muffler shop? If not, where did you get them from?

Cheers!

Yes, I purchased the tips at a local customer exhaust retailer in Delray. The cut off old tips at muffler. Then they welded on two chrome pencil tips w/ rolled edges. Painted the entire muffler black so as to hide welds. I love the look and yet still have a quiet car and no coffee can rear pipe !!!

What size (diameter & length) tips did you get? Mine were 2-5/8" outer diameter and 9" length. We really need something 10-11" long if we want the chrome tips to go all of the way back to the muffler. Since mine were shorter, I needed some small extensions, which was okay because it gave space to open up the pipes from 1 and whatever inch diameter up to 2.5" diameter. Anyhow, I'm glad you like the tips. I think they look a LOT better than the crappy stock tips on the AEs. I still can't believe they did that!

The tips are 2 1/2 inch and about 10 inches long. They attach directly to the muffler and come out to rear valance. Honestly, they look like they should have been stock!!!! Once you paint the muffler black, you do not see any part of it, before you could see where the tips attached and its ugly silver not polished stainless steel. Did you notice that each tip was a different size?? If you cut back to the muffler, no extension, you will notice that Nissan has one tip with two increase ripples and the other with just one. We were baffled, no pun, as they muffler quiets the sound not the tips. Many thanks as your idea was sound and priced well !!!!

Run straight headers man... or better yet, remove everything after the exhaust manifold. That should be smog legal
