Brake "CLUNK" when applied in Reverse!
Brake "CLUNK" when applied in Reverse!
Hi all, please help me with this challenge:
I have an 00 se at 56000. After about 20 miles of driving (warm), I go to park the car. I reverse out of a stall (a couple mph) to straighten up and brake. the ground surface is quite level. When I brake I hear a clunk sound coming from the rear of the car. I repeat the process another time and get the same sound after applying brakes.
I did a google search and found that it may be:
1. control arm bushings.
2. wheel bushings. (is it the same?)
Is this included in the powertrain warranty if this is the problem?
Thanks in advance. Any advice appreciated!
Also, I read something about single piston floating calipers. Do we have these on 5th gen maximas? If so, the calipers could be the culprit of the metal-to-metal clunk sound...can anyone explain shims as well?

Most likely it will be the brake hardware thats in the caliper that is causing the pads to clunk. We have a major issue with this on our MDXs- even hardware didn't fix it so Acura designed new caliper brackets to solve that issue on the 03-up MDXs.
acctually right after start up.. its the ABS system doing a self check, if the system fails the CLUNK test then it will give you the abs light. but if it does it after start up (durring your drive) you may have more of a problem
a clunk hapened to me with my wifes Quest. they resurface the rotors and everytime she put in reverse she heard a loud Clunk, they replaced the rotors and no more clunk...after that I traded that sucker.. too many problems.

i heard that brakes aren't under the powertrain warranty. It's weird because the clunk only happens in reverse...Do only the rear brakes get applied in reverse? It seems to be more prevalent in the mornings/cold.
I also realized that this could be TSB 91-096 and was reported DEC 1991. Meaning that they could be using the same designs since then...?? The title of the TSB is "Brakes - Clunk/Pulsation/ABS Self Check"

Guys....thre is indeed a TSB for this out for our cars......I forgot where and which one it us, but I had this done about four months ago....it fixed it.
The symptoms were either clunking when applying brakes going in reverse or clunking when applying the brakes the first time when moving forward after applying them in reverse -such as when hitting the first stop sign after you have backed out of the driveway.
Find the TSB, have it done.....

What about tsb: 01-069A <-- can be downloaded here: http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/index.asp
I feel that it is coming from the front of my car. However, now next time the clunk happens, I'll try to pay more attention.

Thanks for this site, though! Any other people with similar problems?
