Best way to turn the key...

Stupid question but...I've found my car starts better if I briefly stop the key at "On" before turning it all the way to ignition. Am I hallucinating or is there something legit going on here?

when you turn the key to "on" it activates the fuel pump....so if you pause there, it gives the fuel pump time to pressurize the system, hence why the car starts better when you pause there.....

I always pause at the on position for about 5 seconds for the fuel pump reasons stated above.

What irish44j said is true. I heard a guy that was a chief engineer from GM say that on tv. He was an expect in cold weather conditions and said to always pause at the "on" position for a few seconds before you turn the key all the way.

Starting/cranking?

May not be related to what everyone is talking about but at times when vehicle started cranks twice and stops have to turn key off and then starts right up. Any ideas, has been at dealer for update on computer several times but still having hard start issues. Thanks for any replies.

No. When you turn the car to "on" and listen carefully, you will hear the fuel pump make a motory kind of noise for about 1 sec and then stop. Then you can start the engine. My dad taught me this when I was learning to drive and such a couple years ago. I've done it on every car, every time I start, ever since.

Yeah I pause on the ON then I just start my car after a few seconds have gone by. Its so much smoother, especially in the winter... well its still a hard start furing that time, but its much smoother.

Thanks for the tip

It seemed to help my starts a lot smoother, especially since i run on empty so often (16, no job yet, no gas).

I always stop at the ON position before starting. Even when I had my old car. It's just something I am use to. But Irish hit hit the nail right on the head. Anyone who want to dispute that you can chime in.

another tip for you people w/o gas:

2000 max gxe

If the engine will not start due to no gas, park the car on a hill with the nose pointed down. The precious little gas you have will run to the front/bottem of the tank where it can get to the engine

This might be different for other cars

I always thought this was really bad for your car because all the crap in the bottom of your tank would get into your engine or something. Could be wrong.

I wait in the ON position till the O/D light goes off (3 seconds roughly) and then turn it on. I've trained my wife to do the same

I agree...I try to just start it really quick and the engine revs really high and makes a high-pitched whine. However, when I know the car is already warm it starts fine. Interesting, I must say.

Yes, there is crap on the bottom of the gas tank and can cause engine stall. Be careful when running on gas at the very bottom...
