Your High Mile Max

Just curious, what oil are you running in your Max and what kind of service do you do at what miles? I got about 129k in my 2000 and it runs ok, but it is kinda nosie. I only had it for a year and i put almost 30,000 on it. Looking at what I need to do to get it to run quiet.

One last note, how many miles do you expect to get out of your max?

105K here strictly on Mobil 1 since its 1st oil change at 1K miles. She runs very strong, compression is all even all accross the board. I don't see a reason why I can't hit 200K miles on the VQ, I had 320K on my VG30E in my 90 Max SE 5spd when I sold it- and the car still moved very good, and burned or leak no oil. Nissan makes the best V6 engines in the world, rest of the car will rattle- fall apart, or what not, but the engine will run just as new provided its been treated with quality lubricants.

Y2K Maxima-115K

I have a Y2K Maxima SE that I have run standard 5w30 weight oil through from the get. It runs like a top and now has 115K miles on it. If you change the oil regularly, I think these things will run forever. I routinely run my Max up over 100 mph on regular highway trips and the faster you go the better it runs.

i had a 95 max , bought it with like 189,000, had it for like a year & a couple of mmonthd, judt sold it with 213,000 running beautiful....
it did need shocks & struts replacement.....
only prob i had was the o2 sensors, knock sensor (which i really think it was good, but o2 sensor triggered the knock sensor code off), and 1 coil went bad, noot bad for a car with 213,000 on it....

I use mobile one on my 108k 2003. I am, however, burning or losing oil somewhere. but, alas, that will have to wait for another day...

I use synthetic oil (Mobil 1). I do my own regular service and I expect my car to reach
a million miles and beyond. My 87 max reached 429k miles before I traded it in for my
02.

aren't you suppose to run 10w-30 on high mile engines? I run mobile 1 10w-30 NON synthetic. I have almost 80k and heard its bad to switch to synthetic with my mileage?

There are mixed reviews on switching to Synthetic oil from Regular oil at higher mileages. Many people experience leaks due to the viscosity of the synthetic oils. Synthetic oils are a little thinner which can cause leaks in a vehicle with higher mileage. Most people reccommend going to a synthetic oil early in the vehicle life. There have been claims that synthetic increases the miles/gallon since they circulate in the engine a little better, thus making the vehicle run more efficiently.

I have been running standard oil in mine from the start. As long as you change the oil regularly, I think the Maxima engines will just keep on running!

Now you have me thinking: since I seem to be burning oil at 108k, I wonder if I switch over to semi-synth or regular oil if it will stop or slow? I'll give it a try when I change my oil again. I should be able to post results in 6 weeks or so (normally it would be 3, but I'll be gone for the next two weeks).

I'm contemplating switching to synthetic soon (60K). I am coming up to 58K on my 95 SE, with mostly highway miles on it. I have no leaks. Should I go for it? My mileage isn't too high to make the switch is it? Also is a 12 month change interval at only 5, 6, or 7K using Mobil 1 and a Nissan filter reasonable. My car is not a daily driver.

I know this is the 5th Gen forum, but my query is valid just the same.

Thanks

I use Castrol GTX 5W-30. I dont drive like I used to. I take it easy now most of the time, and I've moved to suburbia (less traffic & less stopping). If you put more stress on the car, ie. stop & go driving or lead foot driving you should probably use synthetic.

5W-30 is recommended from the factory. The 5w stands for the thickness of the oil in cold temperatures. The lower the number the thinner it is. The Max runs best with a 5W in a cold start in winter. A 10W would be more thicker in cold. This might cause some minor damage. The 30 stands for the oil thinkness in normal operating temperature. So stick with 5W-30, 10W30 might do some harm in the winter.

Dont forget that that some oil brands are better than others, and some fuel filters are better than others.

Bottom line, you should decide if you should switch to synthetic based on your driving patterns. Save the $$$ if you dont need it.

I bought my 2003 SE used a few days ago (with 35000 miles), am curious if you've gotten your cars to last this long mainly through regular preventative maintenance, babying it or anything else...

My 93 oldsmobile has 111,000 miles on it and is still running. The engineering on the max is far superior, so hopefully it will last even longer!

i use dino juice, i dont plan on switching either

i'm more afraid about the tranny going out than the engine. it'll last the 60k powertrain warranty but after that who knows....and who knows how many times i'll have to rebuild it before the motor's trashed

121k mobile 1 by first owner, royal purple from 80k on. I've run a few weights, 5w30 in winter obviously, and i run 10w40 in summer. the misconception that synthetic oil will cause leaks as seals age is BS. Just as in conventional oils synthetics come in all weights. If for whatever reason beit tolerances, oil consumption, heavier weights up to 60wt are available in full synthetic. You may question why I run a heavier oil in summer. Other than less worry about dry starting, the heavier oil not only protects a well-worn motor like mine, but also helps valve float at higher rpms. Now there's a downside, because heavier oil is more susceptible to viscosal breakdown(when the oil no longer is slippery) That's where synthetics are best, because they will endure higher temps for much longer, and have a higher detergent property than mineral oil bases. So in short you can run it harder for longer and less worry. Plus synthetics have much lower pour points, so in winter it gets up in the heads quicker, less wear. Use a high quality oil, high quality filter, and change them both regularly. Even if the car sits because moisture will get in your oil-not good.
