i think you have to have the B&M shifter to do that. It looks like it pivots somewhere on the stick itself. I have the problem also on my ebay shifter where my nuetral looks like third. Sometimes, when shifting hard into third, i bump the shifter into the shift console.

u could always cut and bend the stick i guess. id like to do that to mine and make it sit a lil further back shouldnt be too hard, friends of mine have done it.

this sounds to me like you may have installed it the wrong direction. i would have to see pics of it to tell but if you are hitting the center console, you are for sure off. try rotating the shifter 180* and see it it looks better.

I really doubt that it will work if you rotate it will install. This is really common for STS because they were not originally designed for maximas. They were probably for Sentras or something since all FWD nissans use the same basic shifter design.

I guess you could take it to a shop or something and see if they can bend it a little. I know installing a 5th gen tranny into a 4th gen makes the shifter go really far back and with a STS it is somewhat close to stock position, but that really can't help 5th gens.

Yeah, I have the B&M and I noticed that after I installed it and was like, oh ****, I put it in backwards! But I looked at the instructions again and it was right. It's fine. I got used to it.
