About Reposts!

I have been a member here for a few months, and noticed a lot of people complaining about reposts. This is really silly. This forum is alive because of us; members asking each other questions and coming up with new ideas. If we did not have reposts, there would be half as many threads, and it would be twice as boring. I completely agree about doing searches on Google and whatnot, but I beleive members with a lot of experience with the maxima enjoy giving advise to newbies, myself included. It gets boring seeing the same repost over and over again, but you can just ignore it. My $.002

LOL. This is not a pro-newbie thread. I think we enjoy talkinb about our cars with each other, and all forums in general would be less alive if we did not have newbies and reposts. A lot if times you can get better advise from .org member here, than you can searching for answers online.

I never could understand why some people got so upset over "re-posts". So what if you've read it before? Just move on to the next one. Life is just too damn short to get upset over something as unimportant as a repost.

...and all that negativity is bad for your complexion...

No, this is not silly... because bandwidth is finite, and we need to use our resources efficiently if not these servers will start crashing again. There is a reason why the moderators have posted this thread:

Interesting conversation does not equate to asking "what is the best intake?" 283757 times a day. Besides, the forums are not here to entertain you, just because you think its boring doesn't mean we need to change the way we do things.

It also gets boring giving the same advice over and over again. I do ignore reposts, but its not about me, its about .Org bandwidth.

Man, I crack myself up... It's friday and I need a beer!

I do agree with saving server space and doing some searching on your own before asking questions like, "what bulb size do I need?"

BTW it is $.02 not $.002

Heh,
i love how people use this bandwith argument.
Not trying to be a jerk but, that's a bunch of non-sense, and i'd love to see someone here (who knows what they are really talking about) try and prove this statement.

Making a bunch of reposts isn't equatable to some sort of distributed denial of service attack, or anything to the magnititude of "crashing the server".

That whole notion is kinda laughable. Anyone making these claims are really trying hard to justify this forums general hard line towards people who
are new to the forum and haven't the patience to deal with someone who isn't as agile at surfing maxima.org and finding answers to questions that generally get answered here alot.

My criticism:
People generally don't appreciate being condascended, or spoken to like morons. It's a poor assumption to make that someone is stupid, or inferior because they didn't immediatly adapt to the imposed ettiquete here. It discourages new people who want to checkout these forums, or more plainly
it's just down right rude. Constantly scolding people who come around here (as if this was your website, or you would love to think) just says to others you really have alot of nerve, or your a general busy body who has nothing better to do then sprout your cynical and negative drivel to new people who haven't yet adjusted to it.

Repost ****'s: Get a life, get a hobby that won't be as irratating as reading and browsing an internet forum, spare us your constant punishment from the dreaded "forgetting to search", please, don't take it all out on us because you have nothign better to do!

Oh yea and one last comment to throw at you guys, if posting a "respost" is a waste of bandwith, then scolding, or posting a message that simply says "repost", under the same assumption is not a equal, if not multiplicatively greater waste of bandwith? Since when did two "wrongs" make a right?

What is a hypocrite anyways?

If bandwidth is finite, then maybe the 5th gen forums should not have 29 pages of threads. I have not really seen to many mods complain about reposts, and as mods they do have the power to delete a thread to eliminate threads. Sure some people don't like to see reposts nobody said you had to read them though. I must admit the repost smilie is pretty funny though.

The best part about it is, i bet not one person here who uses this bandwith terminology, this mysterious voodoo pipe that we call the internet where each and every little packet has a dollar value or something, and each post is a valuable say 200-300 byte chunk of this massive value of umm (let me wonder how many fractions of a penny this big message here costs).

Talk to the administrators about why the forum crashed, or why they may suffer intermittent down time here and there (If bandwith is the concern here)

Also talk about how much it costs to run this forum.
As they take donations from certain members here, and pay out of their own pocket (i'm assuming), they also have these thingies called sponsors. They have not once expressed in any terms of use of this site that you are required to pay to use it. It seems to me, that they seem to be on top of things, the forum seems to work well enough, and they aren't really needing a bandwith officer barking about reposts to enforce some policy on reposts.

So think about these things real hard before you get all self rigeous about "bandwith commodity" and how depleting it is the huge pressing concern of today.

And ANY of you who have not donated to Maxima.org, shut the f-ck up! Those of us who HAVE donated are paying for YOUR use of this site (at least partially, with the sponsors), so you don't have a damn thing to complain about. I know some of you act like everything on the internet is somehow free, but NOTHING is free. If the sponsors are paying for the org to run, they are passing on the costs to people who buy their products. That's how it works.

Those of us who HAVE donated, we can use the "search" function, so we don't have to post repetitive threads. We do our part, now you do yours.

It;s not a matter of "bandwidth" as much as it's a matter of a bunch of lazy-a@@ ***** who would rather post a topic for the 3 billionth time rather than spend a few minutes borwsing around to find the answer. Typical 21st-century "now now now" culture "

You can donate to the org for less than a pair of stupid clear corners (no offense) costs you, and I tend to think that the org is much more useful to you than your clear corners.

The org rules SHOULD say "If you don't donate, don't b1tch about anything"

I don't know that much nor do I pretend to and I'm not gonna get into a debate about it... I'm open to experimentation, so let's just let things run wild... if things remain fine, I've no complaints...

I have to say that your rant here is an over-generalization... I've always helped where I can; posted links, info, etc, and I've answered many PMs from newer guys asking similar questions over and over again... sure I've used the repost smiley many times too... its a reminder (maybe a little harsh in some cases) that certain things appear on these pages many times and can easily be found by a bit of searching and reading. Does it really matter that much to me? No, I could care less. If I was taking this as seriously as you make out to be, then I'm sure I'd get a job sitting by the servers monitoring every post that comes through... judging by my avatar, you'd think I already had a job like that...

One more thing, like I already said, there's a reason why we have a Sticky entitled "Sticky: Search Before You Post (Instructions Inside)"

And in the rules we have:
5th Gen Forum Rules and Regulations - Revision 2005.01.15

Welcome to the 5th generation forum. This forum is to discuss the issues and mods for the A33 (2000-2003) Maxima in all iterations. With that said, we need to lay a few ground rules for the forum to keep some semblance of civility.

1) Read all these rules. Then read them again. Then read the FAQ Sticky. If you still have a question, read the How-To Sticky. If you still have a question, read the Search sticky for information on how to search the forum. If after all of that reading you still have a question, ask away.
I didn't draw up these rules, but as a member of the site, I guess I'm bound by em, as is everyone else... as for why, don't ask me.

"I don't know that much nor do I pretend to and I'm not gonna get into a debate about it... I'm open to experimentation, so let's just let things run wild... if things remain fine, I've no complaints... "

I wasn't directly criticizing you, i was just getting kinda tired and felt liket alking about how people draw conclusions about this whole bandwith debate. It was really just a rant. Everyone gets to rant now and then...

Now i want to rant at Irish:

"Those of us who HAVE donated, we can use the "search" function, so we don't have to post repetitive threads. We do our part, now you do yours."

A rather interesting contradiction, the much controversial "reposts" are a result of what, not having the ability to do a search (as some claim?). Some people aren't so adept at parsing through google on a thread search. Paying for this feature leads me to believe the administration removed this feature, because it actually DID consome alot of bandwith, and they know not everyone is in fact going to donate, and transitively, not everyone will have this bandwith consuming feature. A repost here and there won't hurt anybody.

"The org rules SHOULD say "If you don't donate, don't b1tch about anything"

Your donation didn't buy you an opinion. It didn't buy you a title, and it didn't buy you any sort office. It was a donation, a gesture, not a magic key to maxima.org that will allow you the right to criticize, or pass judgement on any one who posts. Yet you can do that anyhow , and be subject to the same constaints anyone else is. You are not a unique snowflake, you are not a martyr to maxima.org. We are all the same. Not to marginalize your "duty"
or anything, but get over yourself.

BTW the internet is not free, i pay 30 bux a month to cablevision for it. I also pay my technology dues at my university. YET, i do not have to pay to use this website. I also do not have to be held responsible for incurring any sort of fees to maintain the internet, there are no internet taxes. Anyone who posts here and you claim believes it's free may in fact be paying to use their internet service, that is the only cost they truly have to pay, and donation here is not mandatory by any means as to my understanding. Your solication efforts for donation are nominal, the site will continue to thrive without it.
I can see a donation button on the top of my screen, i can chose this "duty" at my discretion.

Oh yea i just reminded me self one last thing:

Buy purchasing "stupid clear corners" from a maxima.org sponsor, you are contributing to maxima.org. You'd have a pretty hard argument if you claimed that donations was the principle income and means for sustaining maxima.org, rather then the money coming in from sponsors, and no doubt the people who spend money with them are finding discussion threads on this forum, which hell, may sometimes be reposts. Donations are a great contribution to maxima.org, but man get realstic, it's not the main reason why this site is up.
Keep spending money at maxima.org sponsors, i'm sure that helps alot more.

He didn't say that it makes him a better person than you. He merely stated the truth. Those who donate are paying for the Org's existence. This is a valid point.

His point about the Org being more useful than clear corners, and 1/3 the price, is also valid. Granted, you don't have to donate. BUT, you should know going in that only by donating do you get the perks (i.e. the search function). You can b*tch about this all you want, but this is how the mods wanted it and this is how it will stay. So, if you're too lazy to use google or just look through threads yourself in the near future, then you can always donate and get that coveted search function.

As far as I'm concerned, Irish is one of the most helpful guys on here. I realize that you are more of a veteran than he and myself, but I think that, with all the help he has provided, he should be shown some respect. He's also got five years of age on you.

And as a side note, people don't complain about reposts of topics that have been dead for a long time. People complain when somebody clearly did not bother to look back a few pages to scan the threads and see if they could find the answer to what they're looking for.

Bottom line: If the thread you started covers a topic that has not been sufficiently dealt with in the viewable history of the forum, you won't get complaints about it being a repost.

Ok, hey first off, i'm OK with irish. I was mostly playing devils advocate, and i think he posts nice stuff here and there. That doesn't make him exempt from criticism, nor does it make his opinions standard.

He's got 5 years on me? Big whoop, i'm going to be 25 this summer, why should that be the reason i would respect him? I do respect him regardless as a person, but your reasoning is flawed, he is not my "elder". In fact bringing the respect issue to the plate is kind of strange and totally off topic. This whole sense of being a veteran is kind of silly dood, i'm not on a high horse, i One point of this discussion was to say no one here is really better then anyone else. Another point is that i don't believe (unless i can be shown otherwise) donations are the main reason this site exists.

wow, what a nice site...

just wanted to join a bunch of cool people who like maximas then i find out i can't post a thread until i have 15 posts...and then we have a flame session going on in the first thread (this one) that i go to. is this place supposed to be a supportive group of max owners or a bunch of sqabbling whiners run by a site-owner who is turning off newcomers by being condescending and limiting access except to the experienced users????

now, i got a nice lo-mile loaded 2000 SE max to sell and i figured what better place to put it up than a place where it's all maxima freaks????....only, i gotta go spam the boards with 15 posts before i'm unlocked!!!! kinda defeats the anti-spamming purpose don't you think? i guess i'll try auto-trader, cuz it just wouldn't be cool to hijack someone's thread in the FOR SALE section...

man i'm glad that RSX is on the way and my (I will own anyone here!) Z28 is in the garage with the top down and 375HP (at the wheels) ready to humble a few rice machines (not that i don't like rice machines...they just can't hang with 400 ft/lbs or stick with me on the twisties).

enough rage for one day...

Hell yeah they removed this feature, It's a perk(as Irish stated before) for donating, an incentive if you will. No, donating doesn't "buy you an opinion" as you stated before, but the search feature sure as hell makes life easier, thats what I meant when I said "I found everything I was looking for with the mere press of a single button. " I didn't have to post a thread and then wait for a reply on a subject that has been discussed time and again.

What I meant here, is that the main reason most of us donate is to access the search function, so we can find answers. Those who don't donate have the option of doing the ghetto google search....is it perfect - no. Will you be able to find 50 threads talking about "the best intake" - yes.

What I meant by 'do your part' was - either donate so you can search, or use the google search - at least for the most basic of questions (best intake, best tires, where to buy clear corners, etc)....

I think you have it wrong about why the search is related to donation - they made it an INCENTIVE for people to donate...call it a "perk" I guess. I don't think it has anythign to do with bandwidth...

Not to marginalize your "duty"
or anything, but get over yourself.
poorly worded by me. I meant that if you are not donating, don't ***** about not being able to search (as many do)...you CAN search, but you have to do it the hard way - either google, or just by browsing back page after page (which is what I did when I first came on the org)....

I didn't mean you can't b1tch about "anything"....I just meant "anything associated with the 'perks' of donating" (i.e. search, avatar, etc)...I'm not claiming to be better than non-donating folks who have been here longer/know more than me....I'm just claiming that by donating, one can avoid this whole problem of re-posting subjects that have been widely discussed before....

Your solication efforts for donation are nominal, the site will continue to thrive without it.
I can see a donation button on the top of my screen, i can chose this "duty" at my discretion.
didn't say it was your "duty"....I said that "membership has its priveleges" essentially. The "search" feature is one of those priveleges.

Example: I can play golf at many of the private courses around here (even though I'm not a member)....but I don't get some of the perks the members get (free cart, members' clubhouse, walk-up privileges, etc)....

and we all pay for the internet...through our ISPs....

it was only an example. I was just trying to point out that it hardly costs anything to donate ($20 or whatever) and having access to search functions can really help you out on your maxima modding. I just used the clear corners as an example of something ALOT of people have that doesn't cost much - and pointing out that donating costs even less.

I wasn't trying to start anything about the clear corners per se.....

Donations are a great contribution to maxima.org, but man get realstic, it's not the main reason why this site is up.
didn't say donations by themselves keep the org afloat. I actually originally had written something about sponsors, etc in my first post, but deleted it because I was going off-topic a bit.....

but think about it this way...let's assume just 10% of org'ers donate $10 each . The org has rougly 47,000 members. so that would be 4,700 people donating $10 each = $47,000....

You can't tell me that $47,000 doesn't help the org out, can you? And I'd bet that more than 10% donate, and most donate more than $10 to boot....

Yea i messed up what i was trying to say, i was trying to say thats partially the reason everyone can't search. I remember when searching was free, but then again, whatever.

now, i got a nice lo-mile loaded 2000 SE max to sell and i figured what better place to put it up than a place where it's all maxima freaks????....only, i gotta go spam the boards with 15 posts before i'm unlocked!!!! kinda defeats the anti-spamming purpose don't you think? i guess i'll try auto-trader, cuz it just wouldn't be cool to hijack someone's thread in the FOR SALE section...

man i'm glad that RSX is on the way and my (I will own anyone here!) Z28 is in the garage with the top down and 375HP (at the wheels) ready to humble a few rice machines (not that i don't like rice machines...they just can't hang with 400 ft/lbs or stick with me on the twisties).

enough rage for one day...

thanks for playing, and for contributing nothing, except to show that you are new here, and all you want to do is b1tch.....proving my point.

I might add....
There are a few maximas here that will OWN your 375 hp Z28, both in the twisties and on the drag strip. (check out MardiGrasMax if you don't believe me).....

on an unrelated note, where do you do your heliskiing?...I'm a fan of Zermatt, Vadez, and Whistler backcountry myself.....

I do agree with saving server space and doing some searching on your own before asking questions like, "what bulb size do I need?"

BTW it is $.02 not $.002

I need a couple of beers.......Yeah its friday

I donate and I KNOW I've saved more than I paid just from the valuable info here (thanks irish and housecor among many). Reposts don't bother me as I've always been able to glean some valuable info, even out of them (this thread is another example). The only stupid question is that which isn't asked.

Look at all the "bandwidth" this repost has used...

Let's all calm down, have a beer and enjoy the weekend!
