Timing advance on 2k2/2k3 - pinging issues?
Hey guys,
I just got a pm from someone, and i just wanted to get some clarifcation.
I was one of the first people to get the timing advance done on my 2k2 maxima (in 2002) andi shared this knowledge with fellow orgers.. But i never did the same thing on my 2k3.
I will tellyou that once i had it done, it felt great. Mind you max advance is 3degrees, any futher and the ecu will retard the timing right back.
Now, here is my question, and just to clarify for other people as well. From my own car and from experiences on the ORG, even STOCK VQ35DE maximas tend to have slight pinging issues. My dealer noted that my 2k3 does this as well.
Would advancing your timing make this situation worse?

First, thought max advance was 2 degrees (to 17 from stock 15)?
Anyway, I've been running 17 degree advanced timing on my 2k3 for about 15 months, and have had zero pinging issues. This includes running in 100 degree heat, and running with 91 octane (not at the same time though...).
I know the Max's are supposed to move to a slight ping condition due to leaning out the mixture for max fuel economy, but although I've listened for it have never heard mine do it. Maybe it's because it's rarely at light throttle...

Maximum advance is actually +3 (18) with the Consult II tool; but it can be advanced up to 20 with other ECU controllers. If 91 is the highest you got in your area, then I suggest you -1 your timing to 16. I'm in NYC, so I can safely drive using 17 or 18, since I only use 93. A 17 degree advance gives you some leeway and allows you to use 90+. 18 would pretty much restrict you to using only 93.
I plan on advancing another degree, personally.

maybe if the stock ones ping mildly, it probably means their timing might already be a bit more advanced to begin with?

As the second person (after MiniRX7) to do this mod (to 17 degrees) on a Gen5, still no problems here.
I have read several posts here about mild pinging on Gen 5.5's, but given the fuel economy and performance advantages to this mods, I would still try to advance the timing to +17 but at the same time, switch to colder heat range plugs -which is easy.....replace plugs with ones which have a higher number in the designator. Example: if the stock plug is numbered 'abc7def', replace with a 'abc8def'......that will take care of the pinging....
