I raced a friend's GTP today at lunch!

Here are the results:

"Mad Max" 2k SE 5 speed with 2 aboard and 1/3 tank of gas, "Red Demon" GTP with 1 aboard and on empty! Both cars bone stock. Ambient temperature 68 F.

0-60 mph - Mad Max by 1 1/2 cars. (3 races, all same result)

0-80 mph -- Mad Max by 1/2 a car

60-80 mph roll - GTP by 1/2 a car (damn supercharger!)

80-100 mph Mad Max by 1/2 a car or less...very close

50-120 (highway roll on ramp) - Mad Max pulling by a fraction. By 120, Max was reeling him in at a decent clip as I started behind him on the on ramp at the start.

Overall, its a close, close race. From a roll from say 50 or 60 mph, the GTP was creeping away. But, by the time we hit 90 or so, Max was pulling him in.

In short, its a good matchup! These cars are a good match. If he gets a pulley though, its all over! Ive got the Y-Pipe and CAI at home, Im going to sucker him into another race with those mods and see if I can then take the 60-80 mph roll title....hehehehehehe.

Ill also say this...If youve got an auto 2K Max dont try a GTP! It will be all over. A friend has an auto 2k, and my 5 speed will walk all over it.

Also, as much as I hate to say this, if you see hood scoops on the GTP (that means its a GTX), dont expect to win even if you have a 5 speed. A friends got one and it runs about 0.4 faster than the GTP's at his track. He lives too far away for us to race :-(

the only thing bad about getting beat

by a GTP is having to worry about is getting hit by the parts falling off of it when it get infront of you

A girl here at work has one. We have all marveled at how it has aged. Now she's got some sorry stories of warranty work. She borrowed the 2k max brochure I had up here and went to see my saleperson. (she liked her car better but wanted reliablity) She wasnt able to trade because she had lost too much to depreciation. bummer.

Good one on the falling parts! Nothing fell off of his car, but I was ahead most of the time anyway, except when we went from the 60 mph roll :-( Damn supercharger!

Thanks for the detailed results. I guess you guys agreed to all the different individual races prior to going out? You did about every possible scenario. How about braking?

We didnt do any braking tests. That would require an empty parking lot and we did these tests on the highways. Plus, winning braking contests doesnt impress the girls :-)

We agreed to the tests informally as we are friends from work. We just sorta did what we had room to do without getting in anyone lese's way on the road. I think the tests were fair and show the cars to be very equally matched, with the Maxima having certain parts of the band where it its stronger and the GTP likewise.

hmmmm......

But you DID have an extra person on board......rub that in. 100-200lbs extra WILL slow you down. You would have won every race had it been even. Don't forget to tell him.

Yes, I would have thought that too. I didnt mention this in my post, but I made him take my passenger and we raced again. The same relative results were obtained once again in all the races.

Ok, I admit...before I even bothered w/Maximas, I was a GTP lover. However, the falling pieces isn't a joke. The car is made horribly. After 1 year of ownership, a usual gtp will have many parts either broken or on it's way there. The lil monitor on the dash will start flashing diff icons and stuff. To me, that's way too scary, like that female coworker said.
The pulley is actually shunned. It's very difficult to install and will just mess up everything else, leading to nasty entropy where parts malfunction. It's not a good idea, just as it's not a good idea to do it on a 4th gen.

A person makes a big difference

I recall Steve Cutchen from the Maxima mailing list say a person could equal a 17 - 20 hp loss. I agree with him on this. I raced my friend's Lebaron turbo 5 speed awhile back and he had a friend in his car. I was able to hang with him pretty good. We switched the scenario around and then I had the extra passenger. I got beat worse then.

I agree 100%. See my post above though. I made him carry the extra passenger and we raced again. The results were the same. The extra weight (about 150 lb person) didnt make much difference in the end results. If we were making timed runs however, this 150 lb would definitely show up.
