ok i have a 2k 5 speed and i pretty much screwed up my syncros in my tranny. i have been looking into getting a new one, i have found one 5 speed, but i have seen like 4 6 speed ones for like 500 bucks. is it really that big of a pain in the a$$ to use a 6 speed in my car, or would i be better off maybe having my syncros rebuilt or fixed?

 

Buy the 6 speed and I will trade you my auto for the 6 speed.

 

I curse myself everytime I drive my max for not buying a 5 speed.

 

I have a 6spd tranny up on Ebay for sale if interested, and I have done the 00-01 Max auto to 6spd swap. Try to look for a 5spd. I aint selling my 5spd tranny cause I'm going to use it on my Sentra.

 

Hey Mike, how much did the previous A/T to 6spd conversion cost -- if there is one thing I would get a loan for, that's it.

 

come on guys, how hard is it to do the swap. does it bolt up, what do i need to modify, can i use my spec stage II clutch in the 6 speed or can it only be used in the 5 speed?

Scroll down to Mike's response about the crankshaft position sensor and his later post about the motor mount. That's the reason why there aren't 3.0 people flocking to get 6 speeds in their car. Better off just replacing the synchro's and rebuilding the tranny. Honestly, I wish nissan put a longer 5th gear so that the rpm's weren't so high on the highway; being over 3K at 70 is a little high for me.

 

The ratios are almost identical, and it robs more power. I'd stick with the 5spd.

If its the same ratios, why does my 6 speed turnover at 2500 rpm @ 77 mph, and the 5 speed is 3000 rpm at 70 mph?

 

the 1st few gears are different but final gears are basicly the same

6spd robs HP due to the 30+lbs FLYWHEEL it has compared to the much lighter 22lb 3.0L one. Swap is doable, but cost is kind high- parts where like 1500 for everything needed off Carpart.com plus labor. Hot ticket for a 3.0L would be a 04 Maxima tranny with HLSD, it would really move cause of the lower final drive ratio, so the gearing would be much closer and would result in better acceleration. Personally I don't use 4th gear for acceleration much cause I find 5th just fine for pulling away from people. Lets put it this way- 4th gen on the highway has slower acceleration than mine from 80MPH - with me being in 5th- I had plenty of Maxima drivers trying to race me on my way to work every day. Gotta love runing them AUTO 3.5Ls from 70MPH up :P

 

Below are some specs, not sure how the ratios compare to an 01 5-speed. Anything less than 1.00 is considered an OverDrive. My 02 revs 2k rpm at 100 kmh (62 mph) w/ 6-speed.

hey dude the 6 speed tranny will not bolt up to the 3.0vq motor--i have tried it and it--we had to take an engine out of a 2k2 maxima so we tried to take the 6 speed and bolt it to the 3.0 motor that we had lying around(waiting for warranty admin to claim it) and it wouldnt bolt up --also the starter is in a different spot and the shifter is cable--also the axles are bigger

 

BS !!! The tranny WILL bolt up to the engine, starter on the 3.5L is right in the front bottom of the tranny- kinda similar to a VG30 starter. Flywheel is totally diff and so is the clutch. Clutch cables are going to hit the ABS modulator so the bracket needs to be taken off the ABS unit and it needs to be moved up higher so the shift selector mechanisim clears it. Axles are almost the same, you can ALMOST use the A/T 3.0L 5th gen axles with a 6spd tranny. Do I need to show you pictures ?

Too bad it's an ALMOST for the 3.0L A/T such as I have, because I would love to do a 6spd swap in my AE, or a 5spd for that matter.

There was a post a few months back on how to tell if you have HLSD by looking at the engine serial number, or VIN. Do you guys remember how to tell?
