I was racing my friend in a motor swapped civic. I ran 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear up to redline, when I was shifting into 4th I hit a big bump and went back into 2nd. When I let off the clutch the RPM's shot up to about 9000 (sounded cool). I pulled over into a parking lot and looked everything over and I saw no fluids, and it seemed to be running ok so I came home and parked my baby in the garage. I will check it again in the morning.

That's scary. Glad that your baby is OK. Let us know when you get it checked out.

Its toast

I feel sorry for you but its only going to get worse. Turning that high rpm does cause the valve to hit the pistons and/or camshaft lobe damage. Guess what if the dealer was able to find out that the engine went over the rev limiter. Your warrenty will be voided . Good luck, sorry for the bad news but the damage was done.

Are you serious? Is it that definite that the damage already occured?? I would have thought that if the engine was still running okay then nothing serious would have happened. Is this like a valve float / interference design engine sort of thing?

I seriously hope this isn't the case for Y2K Max Luv's sake. If it is, I would be

Not cool!

Re: Its toast

Ari, come on now, you do not have any proof of that. His engine might just be fine. Many Maximas have overreved and haven't had a issue yet. If he does not hear anything obnormal, and it feels like it still has the power, do a compression tests and still tests normal, his engine is fine. It's not a SE-R that basically blows up if you go that high, the VQ is really a strong engine.

No doubt that bump you hit was third gear falling out of the tranny hence your shift from 4th directly to 2nd. D'OH!

Poor attempt at humor, I know.

Good luck with this one, man.

No, I was in third and between the third to fourth shift when I hit the bump that made me f**k up the shift into fourth.

Isn't it possible that your needle just got kicked in the pants by the over rev and just kept climbing/bounced to 9,000? Anyway, I hope that your car is O.K..

He's talking about a Civic with a motor swap.
I'm wondering which motor, and if it had a built head or what ?...

I thought his friend was in the motor swapped Civic.
Anyway why would you think of a Civic as your "baby?"

What if...

What if when you hit the bump it bounced the other way into reverse! Is that even possible?

btw j/k about the civic. It was nice having a friend with a new CRX ten years ago. I remember being impressed with the speed and agility... compared to my '77 Riviera V8. But I was never really moved to get one. In my travels, I've been renting Maximas from Enterprise, 3rd and 4th gen, since early nineties. I had the $19.95/day hook up. Always wanted a max of my own...to have and to hold...from this day forward...

I am going to keep my Mitsubishi Eclipse as a second car and tweak it a bit. -Peace.

Do you own a Maxima ?
LoL

-Get the story straight....
OK, here's my story and I'm sticking to it:
I had a '77 pimpmobile back in the day.
I lived in NYC and had a 'car' on the #2 subway train to myself once.
I have an old raggedy Eclipse right now, I am po'.
I am waiting on my baby:Ice Pearl 5sp 01 SE AE Nissan Maxima. (see below)
Hey I am by no means a car expert, but I love Maximas.
That's why I am getting one in a few days.
I rented many over the years and had many roadtrips in 'em.
If I liked civics I would go to civic.org or something. LOL

What was this thread about again??

That sucks

That pains me to read about a Maxima being ran like that. Hope everything turns out O.K. I have no idea how everyone else got off onto this Civic tangent, keep that to clubsi or something... But anyway, hope there wasn't any permanent damage to your engine.

Re: Re: That sucks

I think you misunderstood. Sometimes you newbies need to read a bit more. He MIS-SHIFTED. Your REV limiter will not stop your car if you mis-shift. It will overrev by the tires pushing the engine over its limit, and its not controlled by gas. You can hit 12000 rpms if its extreme! No matter what, a rev limiter is useless if you mis-shift.

aaaaaaaaa

ok, are you all smoking? nothing wrong is with the engine, and the reason for that is,

1) when people race cars, for real, they rev the engines to like 9-11k rpms and the engine is fine
2) when they do race, they use stock components to test it they withhold the beating
3) and if it ever happened, then the forum would be flooded with people with ****ed up engines, if you read the 4th gen forum ,the same thing happened to this guy getting you know what from his gf while driving and he poped it in to 2nd gear or something, and he was fine

so, the lesson is, it's obviously not too good for your car to be at 9000 rpms, but it's new, it's a big girl, it can handle it

He was racing "his friend in a motor swapped civic" and he owes a 2000 Maxima SE as stated in his profile. That's what I thought after I read his original post. But then he said it's at 9000 rpm? I thought maxima's tach only go up to 8000 (I may be wrong). So.. I am confused. Hope he will come to clear the confusion up.

If your car is stick try running 3rd up to redline then putting it back into 2nd without slowing down, let me know what you see on the tach!

Re: Re: aaaaaaaaa

Well I re-read the post, and its grammer is not proper. So it's gonna screw others up. He said he ran a friend in a Hybrid Civic meaning his freind had the hybrid and he ran it in his MAXIMA. No where does it say that he was in a hybrid driving, or he was in a Maxima. Get the idea folks?

Y2k Max Luv, don't you dare preach to me about how long you've owned your car. I used to work on them on a daily basis at Nissan. You are a lousy owner if you drove your car since Jul 99 til now, and have never experienced a bump that could throw your shifting off. Also, how many rpms does the Maxima indicate on the Tach ? I doubt you have a "monster" tach. I wouldn't imitate that mistake you made on anyones car. "sounded cool" sound of a possible spun bearing. You did exactly what E_max did with his S/C'd I30. His rpms shot up, but did not bounce off 8 or 9 Grand. Well it burned his clutch in a hurry, and why not yours ? Anyhow, it doesn't matter much to me that you claim 9000 rpm, eventhough its not indicated. I'll read about a 2K that spun his bearing on Nissan Technicians Forum, and I look for your re-post.(Flaming...No, don't start...)

-Peace
I forgot you know all, after all you are "Maxima Obsessed". I just happen to have a life outside of my car.

If you were to put a 9 & 10 on the tach were would they be? the 9 would be between the 8 and 0, and the 10 would be at 0. Well my tach was between 8 and 0 so that would be about 9000 rpm. Since you know everything about Nissan's you must have been right it is imposible to hit 9000rpm!
